    San Diego (1-3)

No team has been put on the couch more in the season's first month than the perplexing Chargers, but then they invited this kind of scrutiny with all their offseason upheaval. The good news is that for all their troubles, they're still only one game out of first place in the jumbled AFC West. But that's the only silver lining. The loss at home to Kansas City last week was infinitely more troubling than their previous two defeats, because it laid bare their weaknesses at quarterback (where Philip Rivers has regressed) and on a defense that is being gouged for big plays.

San Diego's stand must begin this week at Denver, which has never been a hospitable venue. The Chargers must continue to get the ball to their play-makers the entire game, and the defense needs to create the kind of frenzied pressure it was known for last season. Norv Turner clearly can't stop the bleeding in this case. It has to come from within Chargers players who are fed up with the dysfunction.

    • The Verdict: Alive. But only because no one in the AFC West is playing winning football.
