    Cool article about the safety position. Lots of good quotes and points made.

    "You can't play defense, at least the way you have to these days, without good safeties," said Kansas City coach Herm Edwards. "With the different things that offenses are doing now with the tight end, you better have a safety who can cover, you know? It's become a big-time position, in terms of need, again now."

    +++

    "If you're going to [defend] against tight ends lined up in the slot, backs in motion, and do it from your base defense, you better have good safeties," allowed Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. "It's almost impossible to play these days without at least one safety who has cornerback[-level] coverage skills."

    its like i've been saying since last year, we need a safety that has cornerback skills. give us a guy who can cover somebody and lets jammer and cromartie take some more gambles and get those picks.

    I think you more need a Bob Sanders/Troy Polamalu/Madieu Williams/Marlon Mcree; one that is equally comfortable in coverage (deep zone and covering mantoman) and is able to tackle in the box. The trend is more towards hybrid safeties that can do it all over specialist.

    FA idea at safety; Kevin Kaeshvarian

    He is a POS soon to be 31 year old safety who is a ragdoll with above average coverage skills.

    Ant why are you satisfied with mediocrity :icon_shrug: Were the j00s satisfied with the initial offer of ethiopia as their home state? NO. They grabbed the UN by the balls and got back palestine :yes:

    I'm already pretty pissed today so i think if i tried to make sense out of this meshuggah statement i'd probably hurt mtl

    having said that; Kaeshvarian is good and won't cost much. Only other option I like is Ken Hamlin

    Tanard Jackson is a trash-talking gangster we're not drafting him. Having Florence and Jackson on one side of the field would give me nightmares :icon_eek: And I still hope we dump Florence.

    I guarantee you that if Morty would have gotten the HC job with the Dolphins instead of Cam he would have invited 'Out of Position Wilson' to camp :yes:

    Yah there is a lot of talk about him having been stabbed in a fight and having been suspended but that's not the problem with him he is just mistake prone on the field and has a Florence-like attitude. He gets burned in 1 on 1 situations too frequently I watched the orange a lot this year so safety is definitely his position in the NFL. He is a project. We'll see what his 40 time is tomorrow I think it will be around 4.55

    Eric Weddle.

    If coverage-skills are at a premium for safeties, Weddle might be a good option. He's very instinctive and complete player, and played both corner and safety very well at Utah.

    This may be a strong year for safeties, but somehow I doubt there's going to be this run on safeties in the first round. I mean, there's 2 QB's, 6 receivers, 3 running backs, 4 o-linemen, 3 corners, 3 linebackers, 9 defensive linemen--all guys who are considered potential first-round prospects...that's 30 players right there and I didn't even mention safeties. Someone good is going to fall to us, and it wouldn't shock me at all if it's one of the top safeties or wide receivers. All it will take is a couple teams in front of us reaching for some guys projected outside round 1, like Troy Smith, Brian Leonard, or any late-risers--and you know it will happen. From what I've seen there's about 40 guys with first-round labels and not all of them can be picked in the first round.

    On a slightly related note I heard on NFL network last night that Rodney Harrison is coming back for another season... I guess vesatility isn't as important in NE.

    Bush. I've seen him anywhere from 25th to 40th in various mock drafts. I think someone will grab Leonard in Round 2. It wouldn't shock me if he goes round 1, but I don't expect it. And honestly--it's still a little early to make firm predictions.
