I am also getting ready to plunge into the HD world. I currently have standard DirecTV with a Tivo version of their DVR(Hughes).

I am looking to upgrade to DirecTV HD as well, but I have been reading reviews that their new DVR(non-Tivo) is a pile of **** and the interface sucks ***. Plus the force feed you progs you don't want and you can not delete the damn things.

Anyone have the new HD DVR from directv and what's your opinion?

    Thanks!

I have DishNetwork and am worried about some of the same issues...I don't even understand half of it but I'm worried I am going to get a nice LCD tv, order the HD channel package and then their HD dvr box will mess up the picture...when I'm watching live tv, does the picture still go thru that box?

kwak Directv just sent me a free one and it's ok but it does have the problems you mentioned. My wife uses it more than me (until football season). It also goes out every once in awhile and I have to re-start the system.

I have the whole gamet of DirectTV gadgets. Five tv's and 4 Tivo's.

I have three HD tv's. One just has a receiver that works just fine (about a month old). One has an older HD DVR that has worked like a champ for two years but isn't capable of picking up local HD channels through the satellite. Our third one has the newest HD DVR that we had to pre order back last December. There have been a few glitches and some differences in the remotes and locations of stuff. It also has a lot of nice features that previous models haven't. All in all I would recommend it.

Edit: I have never had a problem with them dumping unwanted programs into my DVR.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I also heard that if you are used to the TiVo version of the guide, you will hate the DTV version. Likened it to being designed by monkeys after getting drunk on fermented fruit.

I've had the new DirecTV HD-DVR (HR20) since it came out. It hasn't been without some glitches. But, the past 3 months have been perfect. DirecTV has been really good a supplying updates.

As for the interface, I like it. It isn't Tivo, but the HR-10 (D*'s old HD DVR) was slow at doing a lot of things. The HR20's interface does take some getting used to.

Try to get the best deal you can. I wound up coming out up $40 on my deal, but YMMV.

I have been looking around, but since I am an existing DTV subscriber, the HD upgrade thru them is $200(for the new DVR) with a HD DVR.

Looking for other promotions from installers, but haven't seen anything with a HD DVR option that is cheaper.

$200? You can do better than that. Call D* up and ask for their retention department. If their CSR starts asking why, tell them you've got a free HD DVR offer from Dish Network. Trust me, they'll work with you after that.

What kind of dish do you have? You'll need the new 5 LNB dish to pick up your locals in HD (assuming you don't receive them OTA) and any of the new HD channels D* is bringing online this fall. Any DVR upgrade should include the new dish & install for free. Be paitient though. It might take multiple calls.

I was thinking about the "Upgrade me for free or I will leave ploy". Thanks for the tactic.

I have a 3 LNB dish for my Standard Def DVR, so I will need to replace that Dish.

Doing my HD TV research as well and read thru the thread that O'reilly had posted some great info.

Going with a 42" (as that will fit in the ECenter), but still trying to decide on LCD or Plasma. Not going to do anything about it until Late July/Aug, so I have some time to figure things out.

Finally got an HD TIVO today.

I wanted to make sure most of the bugs were worked out.

I ended up paying $199.00. They wanted $299.00 and I told them to KMD.

Now, I will be a nightmare busting down some tape. :icon_eek:

I had to get the 5 LNB dish which is larger than the old 3 LNB or whatever it was called but that was all included in the $199.00 reaming I got from these DTV phukers.

    At least my tv's in color...with a flat screen...without tinfoil...:icon_huh:

Anyway I'm getting one very soon but considering all my cable/satellite options...my contract's up. I'm quitting Dish.

    edit: nice set up Trumpy...

I tell you what. The phone in the chair is not connected. It could be but I will not answer my phone during a Chargers game. Hell, I do not even answer it period when it was connected. If I am relaxing, any phone calls are just a PITA and bust up my karma and spank sessions. :abq2:

I have mini flex conduit for all the wiring.

The living/dining areas are being remodeled so **** is strewn all over the place.

The entire kitchen and both bathrooms were re-tiled within the last 45 days. Kitchen and dining and living rooms all repainted. New oven installed.

    Now flooring.

I have to get all the baseboards and quarter round installed, then install window coverings, then install the flex conduit for the mess of wires as a last step. Bada bing.

You guys sound like my wife to get **** done faster.

I noticed but my stupid assumption on my thought was an Air Conditioning & Heating vent that did not have the cover on it.

    Yup.

The floor went in yesterday and is still in progress. The vent/duct covers are wooden/plastic shits you get Lowes. You leave them off when installing the wood floors when you are tightening your wood butt joints plus if you put them in too early, you trash them while performing gorilla manuevers during the whole flooring installation. The dining room is totally destroyed (no flooring and living room stuff is in there while living room gets its flooring installed and .... well .... all this **** needs to be done by the Home Opener or substantially done or I suckass. :icon_eek:
