Miami Dolphins veteran linebacker Joey Porter is getting his wish.

The Dolphins are releasing Porter today, FOXSports.com has learned.

During Super Bowl week, Porter went public and told the Dolphins' flagship radio station he wanted to be released by the team due to his frustration about his reduced role last season and doubts his relationship with coach Tony Sparano could be repaired. Porter also said told the he wanted to be waived rather than traded so he could join another team as an every-down linebacker.

"Knowing I'm unhappy and bringing that negative vibe to a team, you don't want me coming to the stadium with that look on my face, 'Why am I here?"' Porter told WQAM.

Porter said as his role diminished last season, he talked with Sparano only on Sundays and stopped speaking with football czar Bill Parcells or general manager Jeff Ireland. Porter was unhappy about being replaced by pass-rush specialist Cameron Wake in some situations.

"I'm an every-down player," Porter said. "I'm supposed to be out on the field when the game's on the line. I was on the sideline in the fourth quarter cheering. ...

"My mind wouldn't be there because I'm frustrated that I'm on the sideline. It's hard for me to accept that after being in the Pro Bowl just a year ago. Now all of a sudden I'm taking a back seat - for who and for what?

"Outside linebacker? I'm the best one we've got. Period. Why should I be switching with any of those guys?" Porter said. "Being 32, I don't have time to be playing childish games. If you want to put Cameron Wake in the game, go ahead and good luck to you. Let me go find a job somewhere else."

Porter said he saw less playing time after Sparano held him out of a midseason game at Tampa Bay. The only reason given at the time was a "coach's decision."

"It was because I went out to get something to eat from 9 to 10:30" two nights before the game, Porter said. "I've never heard that before - telling a grown man what to do on a Friday night."

Porter led the AFC in 2008 with 17 1/2 sacks. His sack total this season fell to nine, still the Dolphins' high.

AS one of the Final 8 teams this year and the uncapped no CBA upcoming season this does not affect the Chargers at all inless we lose a player to FA ourselves first of equal or greater value.

So by forcing his realease Porter has guarenteed himself to not play for the top 8 teams in the league. So I guess he will get his wish playing time with a team that has very little shot to go anywhere.

Maybe the Pats want him, they can sign one FA, they like adeing vets, it could be a match made in heaven.

I think the Dolphins will consider trading for Shawne Merriman. 3-4 OLB is now a big need for them.

Why would the Chargers even consider that. With no CBA in place Merriman is a RFA with a reasonable cost. I don't think we should sign him long term yet, but with the injury he suffered it normally takes two full years to get back. So this should be the season he shines again.

Merriman is arrogant enough that he's going to expect a huge pay day, probably among the top 5 highest payed defensive players in the game. AJ will never committ that kind of money to a guy who has so many issues on and off the field.

So we may as well take the best offer and trade him to the team of our choice, I honestly believe we could get a 1st rounder for him. If we just let him walk next year the best we could do is get a late 3rd round compensation pick.

This year he would be a resonable cost RFA, if they get a new CBA for 2011, that keeps the same format for FA players then we could franchise him next year and trade him if you are right he wants to break the bank.

But that is not what Shawne says. He wants to stay here, he likes SD the team the other players. Maybe you could explain in more detail what attitude flaws you are talking about.

This guy is a game changer when healthy, with our defense we need that again, ASAP.

We can RFA tag him with the highest tender ($2.56 million : 1st/3rd comp) If a team wants to sign him away from us....let them at that price.

My problem is AJ already seems incredibly reluctant to re-sign Merriman long term, evidence in that he drafted English in the 1st round. Then add the fact that Merriman may not be the same player anyway after the injury and the steroids. So it would seem to me like we're wasting a chance to get a 1st round pick for a guy who has no future here anyway.

If anyone offers us a 1st AJ will probably take it.
