I just wonder if his medical issues are withdrawals from pain meds that he got busted for prescribing to himself

Sounds like Norv and Chao have something in common...the support of the players at the end.

Tells you why you shouldn't put stock in someone just because the players do.

Or that people's first hand experience with someone might provide different insight than
that of experts in the peanut gallery.

No worries, I'm sure both your heroes will go on to have great success elsewhere.

Matti, my post wasn't about my being a fan of either guy.

It was about the advantages actual knowledge has over casual, second-hand pseuedo-familiarity.

(of course, addressing this to a guy with a video game avatar--who often thinks he knows more about draft prospects
than people who actually know--I realize I'm unlikely to get far selling a pro-knowledge position to...well...you)

The measure of whether or not Chao was a detriment to this team will be whether or not we see better recovery times for our players.

    < Pugsley says:
Yawn. I guess this time of year we need something to get stewed up over. But looking at the OP's headline, I noticed five exclamation points which made me wonder if that was too many for this particular bit of news. So I researched 14 major U.S. newspapers dating back to the Revolutionary War and counted exclamation points in the headlines for the following news events. Here's the average, per event:

US achieves independence from England, one exclamation point
The Hindenburg disaster, two exclamation points
    Apollo moon landing, one
    Discovery of DNA, zero
    OJ acquitted, three
    Osama bin Laden killed, zero
Janet Jackson's Super Bowl halftime nip slip, an astonishing average of 22 exclamation points.

So yeah, five is about right for Dr. Chao stepping down.

Interesting side note. No newspaper reporting the invention of the exclamation point used an exclamation point in the headline.

Just heard Dr. Chao on 1360am, he presented as appropriate, medically professional, and knowledgeable. But what do I know, I don't work with him.

I never bought that "more time with the family" BS....
Dr. Chao’s choice to quit the Chargers may have been influenced by loss of hospital privileges
Posted by Mike Florio on June 19, 2013, 8:04 PM EDT
Controversial Chargers physician David Chao recently resigned his post with the team due to health concerns, along with a desire to spend more time with his family.
The decision apparently was influenced by a fairly important external development. According to Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today, a pair of San Diego hospitals had barred Chao from performing surgeries.
“I have been informed that Dr. Chao has lost his surgical privileges with the only two hospitals he had surgical privileges with: Scripps Mercy [Hospital] and Scripps [Memorial Hospital],” an attorney said in a sworn declaration submitted in connection with a pending lawsuit against Chao. “This has led, apparently, to Dr. Chao resigning his position with the Chargers. This will also inevitably lead to the closure of . . . Dr. Chao’s surgical practice.”
Chao’s attorney disputed the claim, arguing that Chao still had a page on the hospitals’ website. And then Chao disappeared from the hospitals’ website, according to Schrotenboer. A spokesperson for the facilities declined comment.

So it took Chao getting barred from all surgical hospitals before they "influenced" him to step down???

At least he is gone now, that is the GOOD news...
