I sucked it up and watched the first half of the game again.

The Positive: To start with a positive, I was actually quite happy with our secondary play. Wilson was forced to sit back and wait a long time, scrambling out of the pocket a couple times to dump the ball off, or just tucking the ball and running with it. Through the first quarter Wilson only threw 1 pass further than 5 yards, and it was the play Flowers got unfairly flagged on. Steve Williams played well, covering Doug Baldwin he gave up only 1 reception when he was caught out of position before the snap. The TD (that was later overturned) was on Alden Darby not being in his spot when Wilson started to tuck the ball. When we get Verrett in on the action I'm pretty excited about this CB group.

Melvin Ingram actually had a VERY good game (I would give him a B+ if not A-), consistently beating his man on the pass rush and flushing Wilson from the pocket. The only reason he didn't have multiple sacks is because Wilson is so good at evading the rush, and we did not assign a SPY to contain him. The first rushing TD was designed, the 2nd was out of necessity as coverage was perfect and the pressure was coming.

The Negative: Our D-line was outclassed again, particularly Kendall Reyes, who was pushed into the secondary, washed out of plays, and was completely ineffective when given the opportunity to rush the passer. Lissemore was not good either, and Liuget got pushed off the ball a couple times. There were a couple times where the play was initially contained, but blockers got into the 2nd level (behind Reyes and Lissemore) to block Butler and Te'o, turning a short gain into 7+ yards.

Tourek Williams is not good. The 47 yard run by Turbin was entirely because he lost containment. He also offers nothing in the way of a pass rush. He's a below average athlete with no burst off the snap, and at least at this point in his career has no play recognition.

Jeremiah Attaochu, had a couple really nice pass rushes exploding off the edge, but has very GREEN eyes. 2 times not picking up the TE on the delayed screen, and biting on a couple counter runs. Right now he's strictly a pass rushing specialist.

    Final evaluation: Not worried.

    - I don't take anything we did on the offensive side of the ball serious because I don't think McCoy did. Only thing worth noting is our 2nd string O-line didn't get as much push this week. And Clemens seems a capable #2, which is not really news to me.

    - We played base 3-4, or standard nickel package the ENTIRE game. There were no hidden coverages, no moving parts, and maybe 2 or 3 actual stunts. It was ultra vanilla, I believe our pass defense is going to be a strength this year.

    - The only real negative I took from this game, is our D-line was pushed around again. If the panic button exists, I'm not even in the same building yet. There will be an opportunity with cuts coming up to possibly make some moves to shore up the D-line, and even if we can't I don't expect such uncreative and bland play calling in the regular season.

Oh, and Te'o, Lissemore, and Addae all got hurt for nothing. Hopefully none to serious.

Like I said in posts to the game thread today, I think they need to find a new run down 34DE to replace Reyes as much as possible there. Let him play the DT in 4 man fronts mostly, which is his strength. I wouldn't mind seeing Geathers in this role some and hopefully someone of interest will become available.

I think Williams makes the team despite his poor play yesterday. I think he's the 5th OLB and Gachkar gets the 5th ILB. Wouldn't mind seeing a little more Law though.

Maybe let Palepoi handle the run downs and put Reyes in on passing?

If I were TT, I'd be having a major case of buyer's remorse on Te'O!

I didn't watch the game as it aired, I decided to download the whole game and break it down. I have now watched the game 4 times over and I really can't find much positive besides the secondary being slightly better than last year so far. I'm very disgusted with our run defense. We went from solid up front with good linebackers and a questionable secondary to Looking bad all over. The defensive line (excluding Luiget) is pathetic. I appreciate the rushing ability of Mel Ingram and Attaochu but All of our linebackers look a half step too slow and can't tackle. They kinda half *** react, I guess because they are used to having to get off blockers because of how poor the defensive line plays. Idk I just hope we can get some kind of combination going on the line to let our backers be better....Feel free to let me know if I'm over analyzing 2 preseason games lol

Te’o was durable at Notre Dame, never missing a game in four seasons. Before joining the Chargers, Te’o last missed a game as a high school junior in Hawaii.

Next game really tells alot more. 3rd Preseason game is where starters play the most. I hope we can stop CK7 and his moblity better than RW3.

LMAO to the early comparables wth Seau.....not even close.
Completely lacks the ferocity of SAY OW.
I know it's only his second year, but I was hoping for a little more at this point.

how does one practice against the "read option" when one has no "read option" QB???
Because obviously we got absolutely torched with that crap., that was ridiculous. :poop:

I can't remember the last time I seen a bigger display of nothing than I did watching the first 18 minutes of the Seahog game. The Bolt's looked to me as if they just wanted to get the hell out of Dodge in one piece and even that didn't work out to well.

Preseason drives me crazy!! Last week we looked very sharp, this week chopped liver. To be fair, Seattle had their starters on the field for most of the first half. Especially on Offense! The defensive front drove me over the edge with the lack of a pass rush and edge containment. I'm thinking about not watching anymore preseason games and save my sanity!

Huh?....... that was merely a quote of the facts about T'eo's injury history. It's a recent issue, not something that has plagued him in the past. Where was there any reference to Seau? :cautious:

I get that, but Mathews has had a few more issues than T'eo, and he's the "bell cow." ;)

TT has made sure that if Mathews goes down again, we won't be in a lurch like in the PO game against Denver, by adding a bona fide back-up, retaining Woodhead and hopefully Branden Oliver or Grice bringing in a fresh set of legs. As for ILBs, I suspect that a lot more and bigger things were planned for Te'O but his feet injuries, irrespective of his past perfect health record, do dampen the mood on the guy!

Kavell Conner is not a bad player he will be a more capable backup by far than freakin Bront Bird and Andrew Gachkar.

Gotta say now that we're seeing this team on the field, I'm disappointed we didn't spend more scratch on defense.
A 4th RB in the 6th round? A wispy WR in the 7th who didn't return kicks in college? We gambled a bit not padding depth in the front 7 after the plague of injuries last year, and the overall disappointment of Kendall Reyes.

It's not looking to promising on the D side of the ball but I don't think they are going to show much until they have to. If what we're seeing is all that they have, TT better be collecting names and phone numbers. Still think there will be a doozie or two getting down to the final 53.

I agree with the need to have bolstered the D more with the later round picks, but it's in hindsight now! I am sure that you also know the rationale behind adding to the RB depth and it was very unpredictable that an UDFA would unseat a 6th round pick (which is still not a sure thing according to UT) On Reese, it seems that TT true to form rolled the dice and went with his pure speed.

As for Reyes, the farging guy is a 3rd year pro for Pete's sake. He better shape up his fat arse!

I don't know that I'd call it hindsight now, at least not for me. I remember on day 3 of the draft I and many other people here were hollering for guys like Deandre Coleman, Caraun Reid, Kelcy Quarles, Zach Kerr, Anthony Johnson etc... All would have been easily justifiable draft picks over Marion Grice or Tevin Reese. (Kerr had a really good game the other night, I think he can play any position on D-line in 3-4, including in nickel, we may regret that one:()

They might end up being players, it's to early to evaluate that, but based on the positions they play Grice and Reese look like luxury picks to me. Reese in particular was a hail mary, probably hoping he could return kicks.

Here's what I took out of it. The officiating and that rule on touching the offensive pass catcher is pure horse manure. If a defender cannot literally touch an offensive player then it makes the game a joke imho. Why would u want to be a defensive back?, it's crazy what they are doing to the game.

Agree with all about our supposed run D. Yes we don't have the players but they didn't look prepared at all. Yes it's the preseason but I am still not a Pagano fan. He might be a real nice guy and popular but I need him to flat out coach his defensive *** off not be a great guy. I'm tired of all the light hearted buddy buddy interviews. Let's instil some fire somebody please....

Clemens is so far superior to CBJ it's hilarious. While I don't necessarily don't want to see him play a down in the regular season, I don't see our season falling apart should the worst happen to #17.

I think I'm already looking forward to next years draft when we pick up a solid 3-4 defensive end to replace Reyes...

Y'all jump, I'll stay on the ship a little longer and see what happens. While I agree, the performance on Friday night was atrocious I just can't see them being that bad. My hope is they can somehow put it all together for the regular season, they may not be a top 10 D but I don't see them as bottom feeders either.

Some guys will get cut over the next few weeks who are worth a look to.

They need to replace Don Johnson, haven't seen one DL really emerge since Rivera left. Johnson and Rivera seemed to work well together with that patchwork rotation we used in 2009 and 2010. Since then, DL has stunk, despite having more resources put into it. Johnson was a 43 guy from the Bears.

Pagano is the DC, developing individual players in different position groups isn't his responsibility anymore. I'm not letting Pagano off the hook, I like the guy, but I do have some doubts about his approach. But if a certain position group is continually underperforming, you have to look at the position coach first or in addition to the DC.

The defensive coaches are still all prior regime hold-overs expect the DB coach who came from Denver. So even if Pagano is re-signed, I would expect McCoy might want to add someone else to defensive side. I think Joe Barry is pretty safe unless the whole defense implodes. So that points to Johnson as well.
