CINCINNAT-UH-SAN DIEGO – To be sure, the Chargers have yet to catch up with the Bengals in the NFL's all-important rap sheet category. Cincinnati is scheming to lam off with The League's single-season arrest record. But the Chargers, bless their lawyers, just won't go away.

Perception can be everything. And the Chargers' reputation as a law-abiding football team, built with care by A.J. Smith, their Northwest Mountie/Dudley Do-Right general manager, is being backed up into the slammer.

Rumors that they're changing their name to the Charges probably aren't true. But this would be enough to make Jack Webb break out in hives.
