What a sad story. I've never heard about it before. That must have been a very violent hit...and during a meaningless exhibition game. Only 26 at the time. Terrible. Dumb Raiders.

Tatum, maybe he change his stance lately, never feels wrong about that hit.

I don't even think it was a preseason game. Wasn't it a scrimmage?

Tatum was, is and will always be a dick.

It was a pre-season game and if I remember correctly, it was one of the last of the season and televised across the nation. Very sad day in the NFL for something like that to happen but I don't think it was intentional on Tatums part, Damn though, he should have at least apologized. :bolt2:

SAN FRANCISCO -- Since their violent collision 26 years ago in Oakland, Darryl Stingley and Jack Tatum haven't seen or spoken to each other. But now in the interest of medical science, their estrangement finally may be ending.

Stingley has been in a wheelchair since 1978 after being hit by Tatum on a pass route during a New England-Oakland preseason football game. The blow left Stingley a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down.

I hope the linky thingy worked, if not FO.:icon_tease: :bolt2:

Yes it was, but legal back in the day. I too was watching it and after that kind of lost interest in the game. I think both teams started pulling all their starter out right after also.:bolt2:

A heartfelt apology was definitely in order...legal hit or not. I'm glad the Patriots kept Stingley in the organization after such a horrible injury. It probably gave him something to live for.

That kind of makes me dislike the Pats a little bit less...:icon_eek:

Total Access on the NFL Network just showed a piece on Darryl Stingley, which included the hit by Tatum.

    Nasty .......

Stingley came across the middle on a deep in route, and the ball was thrown too far in front of him. Stingley leaped for the ball, and it was off his fingers out of reach. While Stingley was still in the air (after the ball had passed), Jack Tatum launched himself at Stingley's head.

If they stream that piece, I'll link it here.

I read somewhere that a Photo Op of the two was set up recently, but Stingley backed out after learning that the shoot was primarily to promote Tatum's new book.
