If you thought Norv was going to be un-Norv this season - that is, suddenly turn into the second coming of Bill Parcells or Jon Gruden, yelling at players and stomping up and down the sideline in a rage - then your expectations were too high.

If you thought we would return the defense to the Wade-esque blitz machine it was under Marty and rack up a million sacks PLUS the interceptions we got last year - then your expectations were too high.

If you thought Gates, Merriman, LT, and Jamal would step into prime time with no sign of preseason rust - then your expectations were too high.

If you thought - think - that Philip Rivers won't have a bad game this season, then your expectations are too high.

If you think that LT won't have a bad game this season, then your expectations are too high.

If you don't think some other team's offense is going to light our defense up like a Christmas tree in an embarassing fashion... then your expectations are to high.

If you don't think there will be spots where you see the Chargers play bad enough to make you say to yourself, "Wow, that looked terrible," then your expectations are too high.

Don't get me wrong here. There's nothing wrong with keeping the faith that the team will win every Sunday. There's nothing wrong with believing that the defense is going to bat that last second pass from Jake Delhomme. Just like there's nothing wrong with feeling the sudden, stunned drop in the pit of your stomach when he does, or venting to the fellow forumites here, or (like me) undertaking some therapeutic game analysis and writing about it, separating yourself from the fan in you a bit.

But if your expectations make you say stupid stuff like:

"PREVENT SUCKS!" when our last defensive stand didn't have a lick of "Prevent" as most knowledgeable people correctly define it...

"The season's over... might as well start planning for next year!" right before the Chargers go on a 8-game run into the playoffs...

"Marty > Norv!" right before Norv wins two more playoff games in one year than Marty has in the last decade and change...

"LT has lost a step!" right before he has a season for the ages...

"AJ is ruining this team!" right before he signs Chris Chambers...

"Cottrell must go!" before his defense leads the league in turnover ratio and interceptions...

...then your expectations are getting the better of you.

It's a long season. Lots can happen. People get hurt. Players get older. Upsets happen - and they happen more often the better you are as a team. When they do happen, I'm as unhappy as the lot of you.

However, I only have one expectation - Win the Superbowl. I don't give a flying frack about how we get there or if we look pretty doing it. Just get there and win the damn thing. In the meanwhile, I'll enjoy this ride, analyze, critique, and scream my head off on Sundays because this team is one of the loves of my life. I don't expect hype, I don't expect 52-0 shutouts, heck, I don't even expect good ILB play these days. But I do expect that we will be holding that Lombardi in February, because I believe that's the caliber of team we are, and because I believe we are damn good enough, blemishes and all.

If that's what your expectation is too, then you've passed this class. Now let's go get that damn trophy.
