Maybe it’s because the Chargers started slowly again. Maybe it’s that they play in sleepy San Diego. Maybe it’s both.

The fact is that if fans alone determined who played in the Pro Bowl, only two Chargers would be on the field in Miami on Jan. 31.

Darren Sproles is the AFC’s leading vote-getter at kick returner, and Antonio Gates is second to Indianapolis’ Dallas Clark among tight ends.

    That’s it.

Quarterback Philip Rivers, who leads the AFC with a 103.7 passer rating, is fifth behind Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Carson Palmer.

Antonio Cromartie is fourth among cornerbacks, as is Eric Weddle fourth among free safeties.

Receiver Vincent Jackson is not in the top five. Neither is any Chargers offensive lineman.

Shawne Merriman has the fifth-most votes among outside linebackers. Shaun Phillips is not in the top five.

Nate Kaeding, who leads the NFL in scoring, is third among kickers. Mike Scifres is fourth among punters. Kassim Osgood trails Cleveland’s Josh Cribbs as the AFC’s special teamer.

Perhaps fortunately for the Chargers, Pro Bowl spots are determined equally by fans, players and coaches.

Fan voting closes Monday, the same day Chargers players and coaches are scheduled to vote. All coaches and players must vote by Dec. 23.

The teams will be announced Dec. 29.

Of course, no Chargers players want to actually participate in the Pro Bowl. The NFL moved the game to the Sunday between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, and no players involved in the conference championship games will play in the Pro Bowl.

Maybe it's because they're doing it as a team as opposed to doing it as individuals like before.

this is a great blessing. No distractions for these guys while the Saints and the Colts will be having to answer the same questions about perfection from here on out.

    I don't vote on this because I don't care.
I don't even watch the Pro Bowl.

They make the Pro Bowl, they ask for more money.
