There have been whispers that the Packers will make a play for Johnson, who is threatening to hold out as he enters the final year of his rookie contract with the Chiefs, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
Spin: Johnson is reportedly looking for an eight-year deal worth between $80 and $90 million, and the Chiefs are reportedly willing to listen to trade offers. The Packers have some cap room to play around with, but the Chiefs' initial asking price (thought to be first-, second- and third-round picks) is too steep for this to be anything more than an intriguing rumor at this stage.

Vick was ordered by commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday to stay away from the Falcons' training camp until the league reviews the dogfighting charges against him, the Associated Press reports.
Spin: So much for letting the legal process run its course before determining possible punishment from the league. "While it is for the criminal justice system to determine your guilt or innocence, it is my responsibility as commissioner of the National Football League to determine whether your conduct, even if not criminal, nonetheless violated league policies, including the Personal Conduct Policy," Goodell said in a letter to Vick. The commissioner also told Atlanta not to levy any punishment until the league finished its investigation. We don't know how long the league's review process will take, but Goodell's handling of other personal conduct issues this season has usually been swift. The chances of drafting Vick this season and receiving a significant fantasy contribution from him continue to look bleak.

McCardell has agreed to terms with the Texans, the Washington Post reports.
Spin: McCardell hasn't signed yet, the Post writer has simply "heard" that Houston has agreed to terms with the veteran receiver. The signing would make sense, however, since McCardell has visited with the Texans and resides in Houston. The Texans have a plethora of young and unproven talent at receiver, so McCardell's presence should be a on-field benefit as both a player and instructor. He should fit in as either the No. 2 wideout opposite Andre Johnson, or as the No. 3 guy out of the slot.

Galloway (other business interests) might have to miss a day during the first week of training camp with the Buccaneers, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
Spin: Galloway is a co-owner of the AFL Columbus Destroyers, who play in the Arena Bowl in New Orleans on July 29. He'll likely get a day off to check on his investment. As in past camps, Galloway will only work out once a day when the Bucs are in two-a-days in order to reduce his injury risk; Galloway has had multiple hamstring injuries in his career, but has not missed a start over the last two seasons.

Bennett wouldn't be a full-time option if Larry Johnson decides to hold out of training camp, the Kansas City Star reports.
Spin: Bennett can produce when called upon, evidenced by his 5.6 yards per carry average last season, but his inability to stay healthy limits his productivity nearly every season. If Johnson's contract standoff extends into the season, Kansas City would not be comfortable with Bennett as the primary option. The Chiefs would probably turn to a committee featuring Bennett and a combination of rookies Kolby Smith and Marcus O'Keith. Derrick Ross might also be an option.

Steve Breaston will enter training camp with a slim lead over Roderick Hood and Arrington for the Cardinals' punt and kickoff return duties, according to the East Valley Tribune.
Spin: Arrington, who is expected to serve as Arizona's third-down back, did a decent job in 2006 as a kickoff returner. He's probably third on the depth chart as a returner entering training camp, but the battles are tight.

Coach Herm Edwards doesn't want a quarterback for the short term, but would rather have the position set for the foreseeable future, the Kansas City Star reports.
Spin: In other words, he wants Croyle to start. A short-term solution describes Huard perfectly; everyone knows that he would simply be a stopgap until the Chiefs felt Croyle was ready to start. It's a near certainty that Croyle will become the starter at some point in 2007, the question remains when. Offseason practices and coaches' comments seem to indicate that opening day could be the answer.

Jackson will likely share the load with Vernand Morency this season, although one could outperform the other and emerge as the primary ballcarrier, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports.
Spin: As a one-cut back with good vision and burst, Jackson is an excellent fit in Green Bay's zone-blocking scheme. Morency will put up a fight in training camp, but Jackson seems to be more of a complete package: rushing, receiving and blocking.

Miller is a "lock" for 50 or more receptions, the Oakland Tribune reports.
Spin: Considering Miller will be receiving his looks from one of the inexperienced trio of JaMarcus Russell, Andrew Walter or Josh McCown, a 50-reception season is far from a lock. Oakland hasn't had a tight end hit that mark in the last fifteen seasons, so don't expect a rookie to break that streak. It's not all gloom and doom, though. Even though he might not hit 50, Miller still has the pass-catching ability to become a consistent option for whoever is behind center.

The Giants waved Watts on Monday, the team's official web site reports.
Spin: The Broncos gave up on Watts at the start of last season and now the Giants have done the same. He might catch on with another team, but is probably nothing more than a practice squad player.

    Ball pump lung hurt again...

The Jets placed Dwight (foot) on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list on Monday, the team's official web site reports.
Spin: Dwight will not practice with the Jets when training camp opens on Friday, but can be added to the active roster any time before the season starts. He wasn't a major factor at receiver last season (16 catches for 112 yards), but contributed a 10.4-yard average as the team's top punt returner.

The Steelers will continue to expand Roethlisberger's responsibilities as he heads into his fourth season, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Spin: New offensive coordinator Bruce Arians seems willing to put the game in Roethlisberger's hands more so than in the past. "He's always had good control of what he's doing, we're just asking him to do more," Arians said. "We're expanding his role. He embraced it. He's spent a lot of time at it." The increased role for Roethlisberger includes more planned use of the no-huddle offense, more use of three and four receivers on first and second downs with the quarterback under center and not in the shotgun, and more freedom for him to change the blocking protection and the play at the line of scrimmage.

James is very optimistic heading into training camp and is willing to spend more time on the field during Arizona's four preseason games, according to the Arizona Republic.
Spin: Last year, he rushed only seven times in four preseason games and gained just one total yard. James could carry five or six times per game this preseason. He seems happy under Arizona's new coaching staff and has to love head coach Ken Whisenhunt's plan to give him at least 300 carries with an improved offensive line. A major unanswered question is whether or not Arizona, once again a trendy pick to make the postseason, can shake its decades-long doldrums.

Culpepper may be on the verge of signing with the Falcons if Michael Vick (animal cruelty indictment) is indeed suspended or placed on leave of absence, a development that could occur as soon as Monday or Tuesday, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
Spin: According to the report, the Falcons are believed to have reached out to Culpepper, who would be a better long-term answer as a Vick replacement than Joey Harrington. Several teams, including the Jaguars, Rams and Bucs, have contacted Culpepper over the past week or so, but it's believed Culpepper (who is acting as his own agent) is looking for starter's money, which apparently no other team has offered. The Falcons apparently passed on Culpepper at first, but given the recent developments with Vick (including what the Times calls "a grim reality in Atlanta that Vick may never play again for the Falcons"), they may be giving the vet a second look, at his price.

    RotoWire | Mon, July 23

Culpepper met with the Buccaneers on Thursday, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
Spin: We have finally figured out what Jon Gruden's favorite TV show is; he has seven quarterbacks on his roster just a week before training camp opens, but only eight is enough. According to the report, although the Bucs did not comment on the meeting, it's believed to have occurred at the corporate hangar at Tampa International Airport. Gruden, Bucs GM Bruce Allen and senior pro personnel assistant Doug Williams met with Culpepper. The Jaguars and Rams are also reported to have interest in Culpepper. It's not clear if Culpepper actually worked out for the Bucs on Thursday, or just met with the brass, as Culpepper's agent (who, as a matter of fact, is Culpepper himself) could not be reached for comment.

    RotoWire | Fri, July 20

The Dolphins released Culpepper on Tuesday.
Spin: Let the speculation begin on where the injury-plagued quarterback will end up. The Dolphins made it clear that Culpepper was not a part of their plans by signing Trent Green and drafting John Beck. However, Culpepper - just three years removed from a 4,717-yard, 39-touchdown season - will likely draw substantial interest from several teams. The Ravens and Jaguars have shown interest this summer, with Jacksonville seeming to be the more likely destination of the two. If Culpepper signed with the Jags, an interesting training camp battle would develop between him and Byron Leftwich.

    RotoWire | Tue, July 17

Culpepper's grievance hearing to obtain his release from the Dolphins has been postponed until Tuesday, the Miami Herald reports.
Spin: At this point it is a foregone conclusion that Culpepper will be in another uniform this coming season. It's just a matter of how and when that will occur.

Martin (knee) has restructured his contract with the Jets, a likely precursor to his retirement, according to the New York Daily News.
Spin: There were some whispers of a possible Martin comeback a few months back, but this has always been a major longshot, and even in deep leagues we don't advocate using up a roster spot on Martin. He's had a Hall of Fame career, but it's over.

    Link - Houston Chronicle

Keenan McCardell denied reports Monday that he was joining the Texans. McCardell said he hasn't agreed to terms with the Texans or any other team. He said he hasn't even spoken to the Texans in a week. While McCardell continues weighing offers from several teams, Texans coach Gary Kubiak said he remains hopeful that eventually the veteran wide receiver will choose the Texans.

It is a little less then a single game check, but things could get kinda messy for him if The Falcons cut him, whihc is a distinct possibility. I saw something that the Falcons are a bout $6 million under the cap. Figure about $3 million for rookies, they can afford to dump him since he is a cap hit of less then $2 million ($7.5 m or so in bunuses, but relief of about $6 m from his salary they wouldn't have to pay). They would take a future hit of over $7 million, but the cap is going up, there are very few top players hitting FA, and if they get any of the bonus money back from Vick, that would decreae the amount even further. From what I have heard, Blank is ruious and if it was up to him, would be ready to cut ties with him. ESPN reported that Goodell is doing this suspension to give the NFL a chance to investigate to give a justification that due process has been followed, so they can suspend or cut him.

I doubt that Vick will be released outright. It is more likely that Goodell suspends him. This delays any cap ramifications, sends a stronger statement to the public, and throws the Falcons a bone for cooperating with The League.
