Keenan Allen’s knee forces him out of practice

Posted by Josh Alper on August 14, 2013, 8:10 AM EDT

The Chargers feel like they caught a break when wide receiver Malcolm Floyd was diagnosed with a knee sprain rather than a torn ACL, but their level of concern about the position may still be pretty high.

Third-round pick Keenan Allen was left Tuesday’s practice after individual drills to get treatment on the knee that helped make him available in the third round in the first place. Allen tore the PCL in his left knee during his final year at Cal and it helped him slide down the draft board because the injury hampered his ability to make a good impression in pre-draft workouts.

Tom Krasovic of UT San Diego reports that Chargers coach Mike McCoy said that the treatment was related to that injury and that the team wants to stay on top of it, indicating that the treatment was precautionary rather than the result of a new injury or the aggravation of the old one. It’s still troubling for a team that can’t afford to go down another receiver with Floyd out for a while and Danario Alexander out for the entire season.

Eddie Royal is a slot receiver and Robert Meachem’s stay in San Diego has been a disaster, so any absence for Allen would almost certainly force the Chargers to look outside the organization if they want Philip Rivers to have people on the receiving end of his throws.
