Clutch Factor: Rivers reclaims top spot

LaDainian Tomlinson may be the most dominant player in football the last month, but Philip Rivers isn't exactly hurting the Chargers' cause.
The San Diego quarterback reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the Clutch Factor rankings this week. That's what happens when your team rallies from 21 and 17 points down on the road to win the last two weeks.

Granted it helps to have your running back score four touchdowns in each game, but Rivers has done his share. His 130.6 fourth quarter QB rating and his 117.9 rating in the Red Zone are the best in the NFL by a solid margin.

The categories our ranking system is based on:

Last two minutes in each half: How good is the two-minute drill?
Fourth quarter: the game is often in the balance
Red zone: Can they punch it in?
Ahead by seven points or less: Time to put a team away.
Behind by seven or less: One TD and the lead is back.
Third down: Often a last chance to avoid a punt.

Here are the top 3 in all six of our categories:

    Last 2: 1. Jake Plummer (138.4), 2. Rex Grossman (125.1), 3. Drew Brees (122.0).

    4th qtr. 1. Philip Rivers (130.6), 2. David Carr (121.0), 3. Donovan McNabb (110.3).

    Red Zone: 1. Rivers (117.9), 2. J.P. Losman (108.8), 3. Plummer (106.8).

    Small lead: 1. Damon Huard (126.3), 2. McNabb (119.7), 3. Matt Hasselbeck (114.6).

    Small deficit: : 1. Peyton Manning (114.4), 2. Hasselbeck (108.2), 3. Brees (98.9).

    Third down: 1. Manning (120.2), 2. Tony Romo (111.5), 3. Rivers (107.5).

Statistics are based on 2006 season results only. Those quarterbacks eligible for the NFL passer rating title (34 this week) are ranked in each of the six categories by their passer rating. The QB with the best rating in each category is given one point, the second-best two and so on down. The point totals in the six categories are then added up and QBs are sorted according to point total ñ the fewer the better.

Rivers INT in the third quarter on Sunday night was his first INT in the 2nd half of a game this year.

Yeah, but what really impressed me on that play was Marcus McNeill. McNeill ran full sprint to the corner even though he had no chance to catch that dude. He didn't let up until Williams was in the end zone.

Those that said McNeill lacked competitive fire and a mean streak coming out of college had no idea what they were talking about.

Hey BDH, have you taken possession of your new Rivers' Jersey yet?
It's bad juju if you don't have it before gameday.
