Jared Gaither (back) not at practice today because he was getting MRI.

I've gone ahead and hit the panic button, no need to press it again.

If he's seen 3 doctors on his own, plus the Chargers "doctors", then he must've had an MRI prior to this...... don't you think?

I hope Rivers has good life insurance.

At this point I bet AJ is watching the cut sheets and waiver wires...

I hope they are looking for his heart, though I doubt they'll find one at this rate.

I'm going to guess that this is about the time an arthroscopic procedure on the back should be coming around. Just a guess on my part.

This whole deal is strange, usually by this time we would have heard some grumbling that leaked out. I find it hard to believe that AJ could keep so quiet if he got taken on this deal. Norv, fellow players or the janitor would have come out with the big dirty by now.

Don't know what deal is exactly with Jared Gaither's MRI. But he won't play Thursday & Chargers are preparing to face Oakland without him.

Maybe not, depending on if any journeymen LTs are cut as a cost savinsg measure, but most likely it is too late.

For all of AJ's success this off-season this was a horrible mistake he made.

Any decent journeymen LTs. You're right, it's not impossible. Just unlikely. Finding Gaither last year in middle of season was lucky. At any rate, relying on good luck to find LTs after camp is a bad plan.

And there goes the season. No way this team is going anywhere with Mike Harris at LT.

Gaither out Thursday; Week 1 in question
    Written by Michael Gehlken

As Jared Gaither's recovery continues at a crawl, the Chargers have accepted they may be without their starting left tackle to start the season.

    They are monitoring their options.

On Tuesday, Gaither was officially ruled out for Thursday's preseason game against the 49ers. He wasn't at practice, instead undergoing an MRI, coach Norv Turner said.

It's the second MRI for Gaither since he suffered back spasms July 28 in the team's weight room. He hasn't practiced since, missing about all of training camp and, soon, the entire preseason.

Why Gaither had the latest MRI is unclear. The team gave no indication of a recent setback.

After sustaining the injury, the 6-foot-9, 335-pound lineman was given weeks of rest. Tuesday's scan came exactly one week after he increased his activity, rehabbing on the side field at the start of Chargers practices.

Regardless, the slow pace at which Gaither's recovery is coming has the team concerned about his status for its Sept. 10 season opener in Oakland.

Even if he was to begin practicing next week, there is a question of whether he'd be ready to face the Raiders in such short turnaround.

"Our plan is to get him ready to play as soon as he can be ready to play," Turner said. "We're working hard to get that done. Right now, he's not ready to play. ... If he doesn't practice, it's going to be hard to play in the opener."

The backup options in place begin with rookie Michael Harris.

The Chargers have been grooming the undrafted tackle, who's taken first-team reps the past month and started every preseason game in Gaither's place.

Of the team's veteran tackles, Mario Henderson is not expected to make the team, and Anthony Davis is not a roster lock, either.

That could leave Tyronne Green as the potential No. 2 reserve option. If needed, he'd move to tackle from starting left guard, a scenario in which guard-center Rex Hadnot, who has 93 starts in 113 career games, would take Green's place .

The Chargers are also keeping a close eye on the tackles, as well as defensive backs, released during this week's league-wide cuts.

On Monday afternoon, the NFL reduced every team's maximum roster size from 90 to 75 players. By 6 p.m. Friday, teams must be down to 53.

Gaither signed a four-year, $24.5 million contract in March with an $8 million signing bonus and $13.5 million guaranteed. He first joined the Chargers late last season, helping solidify their offensive line and keying a four-win stretch over the final five games.

Without Gaither, the Chargers allowed 28 sacks in 11 games, ranking 23rd in the league in fewest sacks allowed.

With Gaither, they ceded two sacks in five games, first over that span.

Sounds like typical Chargers O-line issues to me.

Can't open holes for the ground game, and can't protect the QB..... what's not to like?

I think I saw Alex Barron being let go by the Seahawks was it?, does he have anything left?, they also let Deuce Lutui go if memory serves, he was a decent guard at one stage.

Gaither may not be able to play in the opener or maybe at all this year, there has been little to no information what his ailment is. I know all the BT doctors have it figured out already, he's faking it, he's lazy, he only works on game days, on and on. Speaking only from my own experience with a back problem, I would never go back to work early in fear of losing my job or to satisfy my boss. 20 years later and not one of them has called to see if I am fine or if there is anything I need. Being prematurely disabled is no picnic and knowing I will only become worse with time is not worth any amount money if I can't enjoy it.

I understand where you are coming from... I really do. HOWEVER, nobody is harping on Stuckey or Royal or Hardwick or Green. These guys don't have a history of loafing, have had specific injuries documented by the team, and are getting the benefit of the doubt.

Gaither has many factors against him: His history is number one. The lack of information from the team about any injury which SHOULD sideline him. The rumblings from the organization that they expect him to be ready. Finally, his lack of communication about his situation. All those factors make us villagers suspicious, angry and reaching for pitch forks.
