Jared Gaither: I'm ready to play Sunday
    Written by Tom Krasovic

On the same day that left tackle Jared Gaither had his first full practice this season, kicker Nate Kaeding cut practice short on Friday because of a groin injury.

The Chargers listed both players as questionable for Sunday’s game at Kansas City.

“It’s looking awesome,” Gaither said. “I’m preparing to play, and I’ll be there, 12 o’clock, and we’ll kick it off."

Gaither last played on January 1. Could he ready to go full speed on Sunday?

“Why wouldn’t I?” said the 6-foot-9, 340-pounder, who suffered a back injury early in training camp. “Of course I’m ready, of course I’m ready – it’s been a long time. That’s why I’m ready.”

Kaeding, who is 7-for-7 on field goals, hadn’t been listed on the injury report this season but was reported as limited on Friday.

“He was sore when he started kicking today, and wasn’t able to continue,” coach Norv Turner said. “That’s why he’s listed as limited.”

The Chargers will consult with Kaeding on Saturday in Kansas City.

If Kaeding isn’t cleared to play, it’s expected that Nick Novak would be on the short list of options. Novak replaced Kaeding last year after Kaeding’s ACL was torn in the opener.

“Tomorrow is the key day to see if he’s just sore or he strained something,” Turner said. “We’ve got to have a good plan for if Nate can kick and a plan if he can’t kick.”

Gaither stopped practicing on July 28 because of a back injury sustained in the weight room.

He was limited on Wednesday -- his first practice since July 27 -- and again on Thursday but was listed as full after Friday's practice without pads.

Turner said a decision hasn't been made on Gaither and that the tricky part will be projecting how many snaps he could play.

“When you bring a guy back who hasn’t played, you’ve got to think in terms of, if he’s going to be able to go play 60 plays,” Turner said. "You only get 46 guys, so when you bring a guy on your roster, if you put him on the 46, then you’ve got to feel pretty good that he’s going to be able to go, and go for an extended period of time.

"Those are the ones that get the tough call, and the ones that you’re sitting there on Sunday trying to make a decision. If you bring someone back and he goes 10 plays, then you’re playing short."

The Chargers last year were 4-1 with Gaither as their left tackle. In the five games, Gaither didn't allow a sack.

This makes me happy :) I know folks want to peg him as a lazy bastard but (as usual) I'm hesitant to hop on the hater train. I like having a player who wants to play and is so enthusiastic to have the opportunity to do so. Plus, if he can do what he did last year for us and solidify that spot - I'm even more excited about the experience Harris got while starting and how that changes things for us in the depth department.

Keeping my fingers crossed that Gaither can deliver now and longer term.

I have a hard time seeing how a player with this much rust can step into a starting spot in a week.

This week, I agree. I am much more optimistic that we'll see him in NO. Just glad to have him back and put aside some of the will-he won't-he "mystery" with some actual action on the field.

Until he "re-injures" himself on the field and goes to IR? ;)

I think if Gaither says he can play we need to play him.

Regardless the only thing I know for sure is Harris will get destroyed by Tamba Hali, at least we'll have a chance with Gaither.

Supposedly, Gaither was in excellent condition prior to camp starting and unlike Rygina there were no reports of him keeping up with his cardio. Spot play at best is all that I'd think can be hoped for given what little that is really known about his total condition. Mr. Harris may just have to weather the brunt of the storm out.

I know Gaither has a rep for being able to play without much practice...
but, geez, it's hard to imagine that--after missing dozens of practices--
and then only coming in a few days ago...and being significantly resticted
in those few efforts, that he could possibly be ready to walk onto the field
in KC and be effective. Hali & company are in mid-season mode...Yikes!

All he needs to do is stop Tamba Hali, and when we call a run play push the guy in front of him really hard. And even if he's rusty I'd trust him a lot more than Mike Harris.

Thats the beauty of being an OT the job is 98% physical, there is none of the pulling or traping that guards or centers do. Its only pass block, run block, or a 2 count and work up field on draw plays.

That almost makes me MORE suspicious; he's been so injured that he's been unable to practice for three months, hasn't been on the field for three plus months minus a few days when he was seen on the field after being called out by Acee, and yet two-three full practices and he's game ready to face two very good pass rushers? He claims he's been in such pain he couldn't fully practice or even be on the side line and had no idea what was causing this despite two MRIs and any number of specialists. Now all of a sudden he's healthy, he's ready to go?

I'm glad he's out there, I'm glad he's finally ready to go, but you can't tell me this doesn't look really suspicious

Back spasms are what they are there is no real recovery period involved, and they could come back while brushing your teeth as easily as while playing a game.

Norv said all along he was day to day, meaning the pain could stop any day and he's be ready to go. I wouldn't be too worried about his health, in fact given his history of playing without practice I don't see the need to be worried about him at all.

If he can move his feet & spread his arms wide enough to redirect Hali, put his *** out on the field.

Great get him in a few plays early and see how he performs. Then move on from there depending upon how he performs in those first few plays for the rest of the game.

Fairly clear you're ignorant of the nature of back pain, big advice quit your crap while you don't make a total fool of yourself.

I was just wondering, why was Clary pulled off the field for one play during the game? I couldn't hear what happened because of the crowd noise in the bar...

They had the RT pulling on the play and wanted someone who isn't slow, hence Harris in place of Clary.

Blue Dolt- if that's humor it's FAIL. You whined all week about Gaither faking it, now what boy. C'mon let's hear it, likely you never even played the game on any level.

I just love Charger fan on Charger fan hate :p

Disagree all you like but tone down the attitudes. Pretty sure Gaither doesn't give a crap what we think, so why make this personal between one another?

Actually, that's what the announcers said, but according to the UT Clary said the official made him sit out a play because he stayed down on the field too long after the previous play, and the official deemed him to have sustained an injury.
