this is great news... I am sure he'll be all doped up on pain killers, but having gates in there with Chambers and VJ.... look out indie.

That IS good news..........he doesn't get driven off the field for a mild twist of the ankle, so I was pretty worried about him when he left the game.

Still, I think it's important that we were able to prove to ourselves that we can win with or without one of our star players, it shows that we're made of better stuff than we often get credit for.

 Something tells me that Gates is just a bit more vain than Ronnie Lott. He'd worry that the hotties on the beach would make fun of a 9-toe'd Tight End.

I think a big story from today was how we can win without him. Chambers and Jackson really stepped up.

Then it can't be that severe a sprain. They take weeks to heal.

espn is reporting a quote from gates himself, says it's a dislocated toe... not sure what that means recovery time. But it sounds like he's a "toe up" on our man Eric poker.

    /yeah that was lame.

A toe injury is big for a TE, espescially one that relys on his speed to get him past linebackers.

Ok just did a bit of googling, apparently the difference between a "sprained toe" and a "dislocated toe" is that a sprained toe is when the tendon is stretched past it's regular ability but stays intact, a "dislocated toe" is when one side of the ligaments tear from one-side of the bone... either way, I found a few quotes for other players who have had this same injury, and the recovery time was two-three weeks. But I could see them pushing that up considering it's the playoffs.

Oh and I found my information about sprained vs. dislocated toes in reference to greyhound dogs, so it could be completely wrong... but it's the internets, whatcha gonna do?

    here's to speedy recovery.:icon_party:

If its just a sprain like that, its conceivable with a shot of pain suppressant into that foot, that Gates could go

ha... yeah I meant I read a few articles where other football players had dislocated toes and recovery time was 2-3 weeks.

Can hardly imagine that he won't nut up, take the pain meds, & play. It's the playoffs. he's got all offseason to heal. Gates is a gamer - he'll go.

On another note, it was very exciting to see the way that CC & VJ stepped up, both over 100 yds. Gives our opponents just a bit more to plan for.

I got worried right when Antonio threw his helmet in frustration. That told me that it was serious. And even if he plays next week, it won't be anywhere close to 100 percent.

But it is great to know that we can move the ball downfield with our WR's. We've come a long way in that department this year. Chambers has been a big reason, but so has Norv Turner. Norv's play-calling is more vertical than Cam's, and it really paid dividends yesterday.

Gates mentioned several times that if he couldn't go, the kids would have to step up. He mentioned Buster by name. That tells me that he is hedging his bets and doesn't think he is going to go. Actually, if he isn't close to 100%, I don't think he should start. I would like to see Nanee a bit more. Is it too late to get Chandler into the mix?

He should be active for the game, might be used as a decoy in some situations, or some red zone situations. I could see him doing that, especially in the red zone.

I'm sure B.M., and L.N. will play most of the game in the TE spot.

Whatever happened to Chandler? Has he even been active yet? Seems like he'll be needed against Indy since I'm sure Norval will want at least a few 2 TE sets. Davis is going to have to be the guy that really steps up, though. Maybe three Charger wideouts will get over 100 next week.

A little dead pan humor-doesn't work as well when you can't see the pan. I here conflicting reports on the injury. 2-3 weeks is about right if it's no worse than moderate. If it's really severe it could be longer, because even if you manage to operate with the pain it affects your balance. The muscle reaction to such injuries is automatic and unavoidable.

The Chargers are saying day to day. They could very well be playing with the Colts though........

From the Postgame Show, Channel 4, San Diego:

Kevin Acee, SD Union Staff Writer reported this info from the Chargers; Gates had an MRI today and has a dislocated toe. He will NOT play Sunday.

They won't announce this until Sunday for sure. Why give the Colts any info on his status. Keep 'em guessing until Sunday.

if its just sprained or something then he might be able to go
