I want to keep Gates, but with all the players becoming free agents in 2009 & 2010, it's going to be tough to keep everyone. Hopefully the Chargers can sign Gates and few of these other guys before they become free agents. What are your thoughts?

Can we get a group discount of Condon players if we pay the agent more?

We've got a window of two years now with the guys we have. After that A.j. is gonna have to do some maneuvering of talent to possibly land future good talent.

There is no way I can see that we can keep all the really good guys we have now after two years. Gonna have to do some maneuvering with players that we can't keep before they just leave through free agency.

Still got two years to work it all out though. So we've got some time.

i sure hope so. It will be a hassle to get Gates signed long term. I hope in the negotiation process that AJ brings up Antonio's toe to get Gates cheaper.

A.J. strong-armed Gates into a cheap contract last time. Maybe he can do it again.

Right now, the Chargers, with those few guys we have drafted this year, have a roster that is in its prime, with a lot of young depth. I would suggest that, if we sign these veterans, we can trade down out of the first round for several years if it means we save the cap room to sign the guys mentioned in the post. We have starters who are either signed for a while or up for new contracts who are the best in the league. I say sign them all, trade down in future drafts to acquire depth because if we sign all these guys, we won't need a first round choice for a while. Our only old guys are Goff, Oben, LJ, Jamal(who seems to have a new lease on life) and Derek Smith. You draft because you need to fill holes. We don't really have any accept for long term depth on the offensive and defensive lines and for the moment, that is not a problem. Our priority should be keeping the roster in tact and not the draft for the next three years. Teams lose veteran talent because they keep having to sign new top choices. We don't need any at the moment. We don't need any for a few years. AJ can trade down to grab guys he wants, whose payroll figures will slot.

AJ had all the leverage last time, I'm thinking Gates might want a deal to make up for the first one. He'll want to be at the very least the highest paid TE.

Wishful thinking, but hey, if you can get a group discount from Tom Condon, you'll be my new hero.

I see no reason why we can't keep our core together. Resign Rivers, Merriman, and Gates and the rest will follow. Of the 3, Rivers is priority #1.

Gates would be foolish to go else where (as long as the Chargers are fair with his new contract when it comes up.)

Think of this... he retires a Charger, Winslow is forgotten!!!
Not only because Gates might beat his records but because Winslow is a dick!!! What kind of dick head would turn down a marine asking to have his picture taken with him? Then you see his son... well a**holes breed a**holes!!!

Gates seemed cool when I met him (though it was very brief.)
After NFL... these guys do autograph session, open restaurants, sports bars, host local sports channels, and whatever else. If you're a dick, then nobody will show up at these things or want you on their show.

So Gates could retire a Charger (as he is also a pretty likable guy) and his life is set in "America's Finest City."

Taking on Condom as an agent will not help the process. AJ needs to show Gates the money. The fact that Gates played thru a very painful injury should not penalize him or provide AJ ammunition to low ball him.

Gates' current contract is a bargain for the impact that he has had on this team. He is flat out the best TE in the game and his next contract needs to reflect that.

AJ needs to show him the money.

Though for that can you blame him? With the few exceptions of those who believe Gonzalez is better, can you name a better tight end in the league? Winslow isn't, Shockey obviously isn't, etc. Last contract time we had the advantage of the doubt of Gates being a one year wonder - since then he's been universally known to be the best in addition to being our top receiver every single year. He definitely deserves the big bucks

Agreed. AJ did have the upper hand on Gates with the first refi, but this time Gates has proven himself as the best in the game. I agree his contract should reflect that. But yeah, that's the "price" we pay for having the best players at their respective positions. I just have feeling one of those megastars won't get signed. My guess is Merriman. I hope I'm wrong and can sign all of them, but there is the salary cap to work around. There are going to be some HUGE signing bonus checks written the next few years. If anyone can do it, A.J. can.

I was thinking the same thing. The one most likely not to get a new deal with the Bolts is Merriman IMO. He will expect a huge payday and personally, I don't think his attitude is beneficial to the team.

Yeah, I love "Lights" but you know his ego will match that salary and it will be HUGE esp. with Condon (almost spelled Condom) on his side. His price tag might be too much for us to bear. Rivers No. 1, Gates 2, Cro 3rd and Merriman, 4th imo. I'd love to keep all of them though. Time to start grooming that unknown, late round pass rusher!

Hopefully Merriman has a huge contract year and we can do a Jared Allen style tag and trade to land his replacement.

Where does everyone get the idea that Merriman is a huge egomaniac and is desperate to get out of San Diego? Everything I have ever heard, read, or seen from him indicates he is a stand-up, honest guy who is a good leader and a team player.

Of course he is going to want lots of money, and he will deserve it if he continues to play at a high level. But first of all, it's a huge "if". His sacks dropped off this year, and if they do again he may be easier to re-sign.

But that aside, I've seen no indication from him that he will be unreasonable. If AJ wants to keep him, and gives him a good offer, then I don't see why Merriman wouldn't take it. He's become famous in San Diego, San Diego will have (hopefully) given him championship rings, and San Diego wil be ecstatic to keep him. Obviously he will want good money, but I haven't seen one shred of evidence that Merriman will decline a reasonable offer based on his talents and abilities.

Hey I love "Lights" just like most Charger Fans but dude has a huge ego. Not a T.O. or Chad Johnson one, but he does love the camera. Nothing wrong with that though. I just think him and his agent are going to want a HUGE payday and deservingly so. I just hope A.J. can somehow work his magic and keep him here. Either that or we do a Jared Allen type trade for tons of picks. I would rather keep him here though, but to keep all these Pro Bowlers here is asking for a minor miracle. Let's get that Lombardi while they are still on our team!!!!

Not if Gates gets the best TE contract in the league-which he deserves at this point if his injury has limited him long term.

I love Gates, but I can't think of any team that won a lombardi on their TE's back. The fact is, no matter how great he is or the greatest ever, he's replaceable. I still don't want him to go.

    Jyles Tucker?

I'm sure Shaun Phillips can be a #1 rusher on almost any team. Hell, Merriman's rookie season, the coaching staff still said Phillips was the best pass rusher on the team. But I think Merriman is a high motor, pass rushing terror who is a more complete player than given credit for. Phillips is maybe better all-around, but Merriman can stop the run and cover too. And he rushes better than almost anyone. He may get hyped up by the media, and his sack numbers, but I'd rather have him than face him.

Gates should get paid, I agree. They took care of LT and made him the highest paid (at the time). they should do it for Gates. Maybe he can't carry the team to a Super Bowl by himself, but when teams are forced to cover him with guys like Champ Bailey and still can't stop him, then he makes Rivers, VJax, Chambers, and even LT better all-around. He definately worth it.

I really hate to hear of so many of our players using Condon as their agent. He & AJ have the type of personalities to clash in a big way.

Gates deserves to be the highest paid TE in the league. He's a huge part of this offense. Is he replaceable? Anyone can be replaced, but I really hope that we don't have to go there any time soon.

Yeah I'm fairly torn myself. I mean it pisses me off because I know that it really seriously increases their chances of not staying with the Chargers when their contracts run out.

At the same time I think everybody in the world has the right to get paid whatever they can for the jobs they perform. So I could never tell somebody they were wrong to make a move like this...
