Turner: Antonio Gates is physically 'back'
    Written by

A full offseason seems to be doing wonders for Antonio Gates.

Last month, the Chargers tight end said he was "excited" to prove he's still an elite player at his position after being slowed the past two seasons to a foot injury.

On Thursday, coach Norv Turner affirmed the All-Pro's progress.

"Gates looks great — he's back," Turner said. "Physically, he's back to where we want him to be. I think, like anybody, going through this offseason program helps you get better. (It's) the combination of conditioning, the combination of getting better in the areas you can improve, and being out there with your teammates."

This time last year, Gates was still recovering from a plantar fascia injury.

He was unable to work with the team's athletic trainers due to the lockout.

    Birthday plans

Turner jogged to his left and shouted, "Cover 2! Cover 2!" on the Chargers Park practice field.

He bent into a cornerback stance, the ball was snapped, and Turner chopped his feet and turned his hips as a wide receiver sprinted past.

    "Good!" Turner called out.

Not bad for 60. The coach was celebrating the milestone birthday Thursday, and the players gathered around, singing him "Happy Birthday" to mark the occasion.

Turner has some big plans for the day.

"We're going to work on our training camp installation and our schedule and all that," he said.

    Bootless

All week, Brandyn Dombrowski has been standing and watching practice.

The difference Thursday: he wasn't wearing a walking boot over his right foot.

The Chargers' reserve guard-tackle has shed the apparatus in the latest recovery stage from what Turner described as a "little bit of a strain."

That strain hasn't contained Dombrowski too much.

While limited to mental reps during on-field work, he's been able to participate in elements of the Chargers' strength and conditioning program.

Before the injury in 2010, Gates was having his best season as a pro. If he's truly back physically to where he was in 2010, then Gates will have his best year as a pro.

I sure hope that he can make it the full season without a flare up.

It seems not so long ago Gates was absolutely uncoverable, imagine adding a healthy/motivated Gates back to this offense...that would be the biggest win of this offseason. I hope he stays healthy, and that the feeling of being healthy reinvigorates him.

I don't think anyone doubts Gates. I think a lot of people think he has a chronic injury that is typically debilitating. If his injury has healed and doesn't just feel better. Then he will absolutely be 100% for the season barring further injury. If his foot simply feels better at the moment, then he'll probably still miss games this year, and/or be hobbled for games.

I think people should stop thinking so much or there will be nothing left to burn in San Diego.

Once the brain cells are gone, the books will be next.

Then the Chargers can move to Texas.

Given the nature of plantar fasciitis, plus Gates' age, I must admit,
I'm not really sold yet (though I hope) that he can be even 90% of full strength.

That said, there's no one I would pull for harder, than this man who
has played so hard and so brilliantly for the Chargers, after not even being
drafted...and with a modest, "Aw shucks" manner despite an HOF-worthy career.
Antonio Gates is one of the best arguments for being a fan of the NFL.

On this we can agree 100% Lancelot.

Plantar fasciitis isn't something that usually "just heals" like many injuries over an off-season, so I'm with you on that call.
Having said that, if Gatesy can play at 80-90% with limited pain when planting and cutting on routes, I'll be thrilled beyond belief that he still has a few more good years left in that HOF game of his.

Finger's crossed for one of our alltime greats, no one deserves to go out in good health more than this guy.
