I wonder if this is why some players in the union (Mawae, et.) where saying that even though not a reflection of his performance he needed to be replaced in the near future

No this had nothing to do with it. He was only diagnosed a few days ago.

He was extraordinarily unpopular amongst owners (not that there's anything wrong with that), and players were becoming less supportive because of his stance on rookie salary caps, which most players seem to be in favor of, and his apathy for issues like health care for retirees.

He must have been ailing for a while before he was diagnosed. Pancreatic cancer has a zero survival rate, but I bet he was a very sick man for a while. Condolences to his family.

Nothing against him personally because at one time, he helped the league immensely. But, it is time for some new blood. Hopefully things will get better between the player association and the owners now. And hopefully, no strike which seems to come up in some interview every couple of months.

In an article on the SFGate the story mentions that he had lost weight in recent months, but only found out he had cancer on Sunday. That weight loss was likely the signs that something was wrong.

    My condolences to his family.

That said, the way he handled the NFL Vets with health problems related their playing days was disgraceful.

I'm sorry for his family, but frankly, I'm not sorry for the league. He took some very hard-headed & unpopular stances. Hopefully the NFLPA & the owners will be able to move forward & avoid a strike in 2010.
