The last play of practice saw linebacker Darry Beckwith level running back Gartrell Johnson. It was among the many licks the fourth-round pick has taken since pads came on Sunday.

Johnson was the runner when the third team went live Sunday, and even when it isn't live, there is always a little more hitting of the lower-rung running backs than, say, LaDainian Tomlinson or Darren Sproles.

"I love it, baby," Johnson said after this afternoon's workout. "That's my M.O."

Head coach Norv Turner has been quick to praise Johnson the past two days, noting he has risen to the occasion with pads on. He is a runner, and he doesn't shy from contact.

You really can't appreciate Kris Dielman until the pads come on. He loves to hit people. The past three practices have seen him put more people on the ground than anyone else, many of them with him rolling around with them downfield and outside the numbers. As it is in games, watching Dielman is among the most entertaining things to do in practice.

As expected, Shawne Merriman practiced this afternoon.

Receiver Buster Davis worked on the side, the first step toward him getting back on the field.

Antwan Applewhite, who is making a real push to unseat Jyles Tucker as the fourth outside linebacker, jumped up to intercept a Charlie Whitehurst pass.

A lot of false start penalties today, for whatever that's worth.

Nice to see Beckwith drawing some positive attention from the Head Coach, too.
