Chargers feel good about Gibbs, all interviews to date

Each of the six candidates that have met with the Chargers concerning the team’s head coaching position have called the job a unique challenge considering the Bolts are coming off a 14-2 season. On Sunday, President Dean Spanos, General Manager A.J. Smith and Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ed McGuire met with a man who recently showed he knows how to handle unique challenges.

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs spent four hours interviewing with Smith and Spanos, and a good portion of that time was spent talking about the inspirational season that Gibbs was part of in 2006.

“A brand new staff came into New Orleans last year and turned that team right around,” Smith said. “That defense was his baby, and he did a remarkable job. He’s had a long, successful career at both the college and professional levels, but what he did this year with that new beginning in New Orleans is particularly impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about what they were able to do last year.”

In his first year with the Saints, Gibbs and his fellow New Orleans coaches were faced with the challenge of not only rebuilding a program that had experienced little success in recent years, but also overcoming unusual day-to-day issues caused be the city’s effort to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

Sounds like the chargers will then go to step two and have second interveiws. I'd be suprised if they have a new head coach till after the combine.

Could Gibbs look any less enthusiastic? The clip I saw tonight really didn't impress me. The other candidates really seemed excited about being interviewed. Gibbs sure didn't.

Maybe he knows he's not going to get the job.

Sounded like he really liked his job in new orleans. Whereas alot of the other guys sounded like they were really hoping to land the chargers job.

Norv was kind of standoffish as well.
