    Happy Birthday . . . Al Davis

Posted by Mike Florio on July 4, 2009 10:59 AM
As it turns out, Raiders owner Al Davis shares a birthday with the nation whose legal system he has used so extensively over the years.

So on the same day that the U.S. of A. celebrates the fact that it's 233 years young, Davis commences his ninth decade.

    Davis is 80 today.

He recently gave a rare interview to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, and he talked about how he'll celebrate the event.

"t's a milestone, obviously, 80," Davis said, "and usually at this time of the year, every fifth, from 75, 80, I've held a nice party in Las Vegas but I felt this year, predicated on the economy, that we would just whittle it down to a few friends for dinner, and hold off because we didn't want to flaunt when everyone else is having trouble financially and I thought it was best to do it that way."

(The interview contains various things about Davis that aren't widely known, including the fact that his dad was in the same profession as Morty Seinfeld.)

We talked about the career and legacy of Al Davis moments ago with Glen Macnow and Ray Didinger of WIP radio in Philadelphia. Frankly, the manner in which a given NFL fan regards Davis might depend in large part on the fan's age. Younger folks will be quick to dismiss him as a meddling owner who thinks he knows how to run a football team.

Older folks will remember that, unlike the men who made tons of money in other endeavors and then use a lot of it to buy an NFL franchise, Davis was and is a "football guy." He coached the Raiders from 1963 to 1965, and he once was named AFL coach of the year.

After the merger between the AFL and the NFL, the Raiders reigned as one of the premier teams in the NFL, winning three Super Bowl titles from 1976 through 1983. But a recent history of ineptitude -- and a long history of litigiousness -- seriously undermines his legacy in the eyes of many.

And, frankly, it probably should. But when attempting to identify the five people most responsible for the NFL as we currently know it, Davis likely deserves a spot on the list.

Above all else, and despite his flaws, Al Davis deserves the respect of everyone who loves pro football. Indeed, we all should be so lucky to make it to 80, and to still be doing that which we love -- even if we might not be doing it as well as we once did.

Yes I have mixed emotions. He did so much for the AFL/NFL. It is a shame that he destroyed a franchise but then again I am glad it was in our division. Unfortunately his legacy is tarnished. Kind of like Brett Favre.

My god, he's like the the gollum in Lord of the Rings.
"We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious. They stole it from us. Sneaky little hobbitses. Wicked, tricksy, false!"

I didn't even realize that guy had birthdays.
    I thought he just lived.
He's kind of a creepy bloodcurdling kind of a dude.

I want to ask Al... what was it like playing football without helmets and before electricity?

He is looking ancient and makes shriveled Mummies look young.

'The Cryptkeeper' is such a spot-on, perfect nickname for Al.

It's that rare example of an ideal pairing of a nickname with a personality.

    ???

We're talking about the man who is single-handedly responsible for reducing the Raiders to an utter laughingstock, a complete embarrassment... a JOKE!

As a long-time Bolt diehard, I care about this a LOT!

Keep up the good work on that implosion, Al! :icon_toast:

    We care.

I'm more realistic. I'm hoping for at least another 5-10 years from the guy.
