San Diego Chargers to cut WR Robert Meachem
by Kevin Patra, Around the League writer, NFL.com

The San Diego Chargers will sever ties with wide receiver Robert Meachem, who became a multimillion dollar mistake for the organization.

The Chargers will pay $5 million to get rid of Meachem, U-T San Diego reported Saturday. He still counts $6.875 million against the 2013 salary cap and additional dead money in 2014.

Meachem was a high-priced signing by the previous administration after four productive seasons with the New Orleans Saints. His signing could be pointed to as one of the reasons former general manager A.J. Smith is now employed by the Washington Redskins.

Meachem never fit well in San Diego and his disastrous 2012 (just 14 receptions for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns) buried him on the depth chart heading in to this season.

The seven-year pro suffered a concussion in Thursday's preseason finale, but it is likely his status on the team was decided well before the injury.

Meachem was never a good bet to see much playing time this year, even with the Chargers lack of receiving depth. The question was always about whether the team wanted to pay him to go away.

Had to be done, now develop young (inexpensive) talent and wait until 2015 when they have more cap space (just sign DB to an extension)

Hopefully by 2015 Manning will be retired and Philip will have a few years left

Truth be told, I am happy he isn't on the team anymore but for him I wish him the best and hope he makes it onto another team, (preferably the Raiders)

As a fan I was cheering for him to be gone but at the same time I hold no ill will towards him, he was a true professional. Many players would gripe and complain that they got washed out, while I never recall hearing him complain once.

Maybe his body was shutting down or maybe he was never really as good as he looked in a system where he wasn't the featured guy (talking about the Saints), we will never know, But we do know he wasn't worth half the money we were paying him. Robert Meachem, good luck in your endeavors, congrats on the new baby, I hope you all the best and please take Steven with you:whistling:

Good. Show that people aren't protected by a bad salary cap hit. If you don't perform at 100% always, you're done.

My only concern is that Meachem was a 3rd best receiver coming out of high school, and a First round pick coming out of college. He had a better season between 2008-2012 than Malcolm Floyd; MEACHEM WAS THE BEST RECIEVER (sic) ON THE CHARGERS ROSTER...had McCoy been made aware of this?

I believe that McCoy and Telesco both are very savvy when it comes to their personnel, and it was a decision that had to be made. The previous administration would have let Meacham stay on the roster until 2017...

Well, I generally respect your takes, Pointy, but don't you think McCoy
should've at least gone down to Tulsa to ask the coaches at Booker T Washington High
about how well RM caught the ball in 2001?
I mean, what the Hell (other) criteria is McCoy using to evaluate these guys?!?

Honestly, I don't think that McCoy or any of his scouts should have done what you are suggesting simply because Meacham became more than just a great high school player. He developed into something better at the college level, and he found his pinnacle of success within his first few years of playing in the NFL. And you know that a lot of players are only good for a few years then either their bodies give out, or their opponents figure out a way to nullify their effectiveness. Or it could be something else altogether different. Either way, the past is simply that. It's over for him here. We move on.

Uh....... that was a joke, Pointy.

Lancelot was riffing off of a prior inane post celebrating Meachem's awesomeness. ;)

I've NEVER had a valid point, here, Sir Pointy!

(except when making fun of matilack's pretend-expertise)

(as Blue noted, some clown had been arguing that Meachem was awesome, citing high school, etc...too fun to pass up mocking!)

Meachem is AWESOME. If you look at his Saints career and Tennessee Volunteers career you would see that he started slow in each of those teams then he slowly became AWESOME. The Chargers just lacked patience. Then again these Chargers are the same team that released Brees, VJ, Sproles. Now you might say well it's different management now well I don't care it's still the same organization that made those bad decisions. Personally I think Meachem could have made a positive contribution and the Chargers Coaches and Front Office didn't do their homework. Now the Chargers are stuck with a bunch of injury prone, unproven receivers. Rivers is a quarterback that needs to be fixed. The offensive line cannot pass block at all. When Flucker talks he sounds like if he's mentally ill. Manti Teo is another Junior Seau that when his career ends he'll end up shooting himself. The Chargers organization is a team that is in disarray. You've also got a head coach that lies to the media repeatedly. The Chargers stadium is a dump. San Diego is a dump and the city is a dump. IMO.

But "...with a name like 'Flucker,' he's got to be good."

Oh, Steven...did you really have to try to out-do yourself on the stupidity scale?

Breathe! I know it must be hard to lose somebody you love, everything will be okay, no go back a read everything you just wrote and try this again.

    When has McCoy lied?

How do you know T'eo will shoot himself?

And seriously dude, F$%6 you for making fun of someone with a speech impediment

    How is Floyd unproven again?

The O line looked decent to good in pass blocking, better than last year.

isn't San Diego a city? or are you just trying to get you point across twice?

When has McCoy lied? When he said everyone would start with a clean slate. If that were the case Sorensen should be the starter. He also said they would release the names of those players released from 75 to 53 enmass but once again he lied. That's all I can think of as of know but a lie is a lie

How do you know T'eo will shoot himself? Seriously falling for a fake girlfriend. He just looks mentally fragile as if football is all he's got similar to Seau.

And seriously dude, F$%6 you for making fun of someone with a speech impediment? I'm not making fun of someone with a speech impediment I'm making fun of Flucker and HIS speech impediment.

How is Floyd unproven again? Floyd is an unproven #1 and I meant more like he's injury prone

The O line looked decent to good in pass blocking, better than last year? Decent more like AWFUL man seriously decent, they didn't even look close to decent.

isn't San Diego a city? or are you just trying to get you point across twice? You got my point and the fans are classless too BTW

Happy trails Steven, with us being so Classless and Meachem no longer on the team, you should have no trouble finding your way to the exit.

Hopefully like Meachem, you can be someone else's problem
