The Chargers will apparently be without starting center Nick Hardwick until at least December and perhaps the rest of this season.

Sources said the team will announce later today that Hardwick is having surgery today on his left ankle and will be out at least eight weeks.

It is not known whether the Chargers will place Hardwick on injured reserve. They could decide to save a roster spot in case he can come back to help for a possible postseason run.

The Chargers last week lost nose tackle Jamal Williams, the cornerstone of their defense, for the season with a triceps tear.

Hardwick was injured in the third quarter of the Chargers' season-opening victory at Oakland.

Scott Mruczkowski has been filling in for Hardwick and will continue to do so, though it is not known whether they will try to find depth behind him. Their backup center currently is Dennis Norman, who was signed last week.

Hardwick is undergoing the procedure in Indianapolis with the same surgeon that repaired his foot after the 2007 season

    Brilliant.

Why did any of us believe he would be back soon?

It is getting very hard to be optimistic right now...

I know I'll get flamed for this but Hardwick wasn't tearing it up when he was out there. I've noticed that he has a tough time with bigger nose tackles. The guy is a bit undersized. Let's see what the bolts can do to fill his spot.

The bad news just keeps rolling in. He might as well sit out the rest of the season because you know he won't be at 100% even in December.

If it looks like it's 8 weeks minimum I'd at least consider IR at this point. Looks like we need the help on either line the way our guys are going down.

It's looking more like we're going to have to take the long road out to Miami. Damn, I love football, over come and win. If not go hibernate for the season.

Mruc played pretty good last week it seemed. Are we good with him and Norman? Bring Newberry back?

I would rather see a fatty from this forum out there. Newberry played like he was 70 years old.

As many on this forum know, I've been down on Hardwick for a long time....I'm not going to say Nick doesn't bring something to this team as a heady player and good signal caller at Center with a lot of experience.....but let's just say that I didn't see a drop off AT ALL against a VERY physical Ravens D-Line and front 7....and Alphabet is a bigger and more physical presence in the interior of our line....with some more game time...Nick may have a hard time getting his job back.

 I ain't givin' up on nothing. a lot of very good AFC teams are 1-1 right now. Maybe some of these young, hungry guys will breathe a little life into this team. :icon_banana:

Dude he came off major foot surgery last year (mid season with metal plates in his foot), and played three quarters this year. I'm not sure where you get off judging him so harshly.... When he's healthy he's a stud.
