Has Foley's "injury" turned our Defense into a 4-3?

Shaun Phillips' greatest asset is how quickly he gets off the ball. He is essentially a defensive end, whether he puts his hand on the ground or not. What percentage of the time do you guys actually see Phillips dropping into coverage? My guess is that it's less than 10%.

And what impact will this have on Shawne Merriman's play? It seems Merriman will spend less time rushing the passer than he might have with Foley in there. The good news is that Merriman has looked outstanding in pass coverage this preseason, something that was clearly his achilles heel last season. He has looked exceptional in both man and zone coverage, and the pick he had against the Seachickens was incredible.

Perhaps the silver lining in Foley's "injury" is that it will force Wade to blitz more. With Merriman and Phillips being such exceptional pass rushers we might see more 5 man blitzes than we would have with Foley in the lineup. I think most observers would agree that, while it's important to mix things up and keep an offense guessing, the Bolts' D is at their best when they are attacking.

Personally, I hope to see alot of plays where Merriman and Phillips are coming off the edge at the QB, which would be reminiscent of the Greg Lloyd/Kevin Greene Steelers D, a defense which rushed a minimum of 5 on almost every play.

One player does not change our BASE defense - although losing Jamal has merit but nonetheless, our base defense stays the same.

To go to a 4-3 Base defense means getting rid of Jamal and probably Igor...Castillo could work in a 4-3 because he has the wheels but not Igor nor Jamal.

4-3 D-lines are smaller and quicker and do a whole lot more stunting than a 3-4 line.

We become a 4-3 on passing downs when Phillips comes in and puts his hand on the ground. I didn't mean that we'd technically be a 4-3, but that we'd essentially be a 4-3, since we'd have the same four guys rushing pretty much on every play. Phillips is really a rush specialist more than anything else at this point.

That is called a 4-3 "look".

Losing Foley will not change our Base defense or our "4-3 looks".

Nothing really changes other than Shaun Phillips needs to show his run stopping ability (to silence the critics basically) because he blows the doors off of Foley in pass rushing hands down.

That's what he has been used as but that doesn't mean that is all he can do. He is such a good pass rusher that you have to get him on the field for passing downs. He started five games last year and played well when he was in on running downs as well. His job is containment on the run to channel everything back into the middle. He's not supposed to make ten tackles a game. He'll be fine. Our defense will not show any real drop-off with him in the starting line up.

Phillips for Foley is nothing compared to Bingham for Williams.

True. The good thing is that our rushing D did not falter in the games Phillips started last season. The place we will miss Foley the most is that it limits our rotation. With Phillips, Foley and Merriman, we had three top quality pass rushers that could sub for one another to kep fresh. We're going to see less of that with Foley out.

The ONLY thing we lose is the UGLY factor. Steve Foley is an UGLY mother - his face. He is halloween ready he is that ugly.

I am not sure how that plays in a game where everyone not wearing the same color is not as ugly? :icon_shrug:

Marques Harris has shown that he can get after the QB. Maybe not at a Phillips/Merriman level but atleast at a Foley level.

Porter had his hand on the ground at the snap the other night ..... dropped into coverage ... then picked off Culpepper.

Zone blitzing - using Phillips to drop - creates more confusion for the offense. That would surprise Brooks.

This is what confused the hell out of Manning everytime we have met him. The first time we ran out of gas but last year we could keep up the intensity of the zone blitzes. I saw dudes flat out haul *** up to the line then haul *** 20 yards back in zone coverages......it was amazing to watch......and takes tremendous stamina.

Yeah, you know Dude's ugly factor is off the charts. Did you see the photo of the "woman" he was with the other night? Shouldn't a dude making millions be able to do better than that, no matter how ugly he is?

No offense, but what kinda stupid thing is that to say. We had the 3-4 before we even had Merriman, and Merriman is just as good if not better than Foley. Why would we change it one week from the season? :icon_shrug:

Chargers | Players protesting team's decision to not pay Foley
    Sun, 10 Sep 2006 08:38:23 -0700

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports some of the San Diego Chargers players are protesting the team's decision to not pay LB Steve Foley (gunshot) after he was shot three times by an off-duty police officer. The team placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list which will cause him to forfeit $775,000 in salary.

We are still perfect in the 3-4 and Phillips will do great
When Foley was out last season for three games one SI writer call Phillips and Merriman "Hell on Wheels"
