O'Connell released, happy to have been a Charger
    Written by Kevin Acee

Kevin O'Connell sounded as pleased as ever that he got a chance to play with his hometown team.

Even though he didn't actually get a chance to play. Even though he was speaking a few hours after the team released him.

"I enjoyed my time there," the former La Costa Canyon High and San Diego State quarterback said Saturday afternoon. "Everyone down there is a class act. I was a fan of the organization when I got there, and I'm a fan now."

O'Connell signed with the Chargers on July 29 after Kyle Boller abruptly quit. O'Connell knew he was just filling in while Charlie Whitehurst was out with a strained MCL. Whitehurst returned to practice Saturday.

O'Connell was expected to get some snaps in the preseason opener this past Thursday. But after starter Philip Rivers left, rookie Jarrett Lee played the final three-plus quarters of the Chargers' 21-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

"I was aware of the situation going in," O'Connell said. "That didn't stop me from enjoying the experience."

Turner said Thursday that O'Connell would get some snaps this week against Dallas. The decision to release O'Connell now was at least partially due to his desire to have a chance to pursue other opportunities.

I always felt this kid was a starter. He'd be great in San Fran or Seattle.

Is this really news worth? Even by Acee's standards this a bit low.

What exactly has Charlie Whitehurst done to inspire such thorough confidence by the coaching staff?

I dunno... maybe he knows the playbook and the system so he's a natural on the headset for PR?

I think Jarrett Lee could give him a run for his money on the field though. Hopefully we'll carry 3 QB's this year...

I doubt it...... unless you're counting the practice squad. I expect us to go with 2 on the active roster, just as we did last year.

Problem is, any decent #3 won't make it to the PS or won't stay there long. Just like Tolzien last year... :(

How is he doing? he's going into his sophomore yr at LSU right? I remember watching some video of him in high school and the similarity to Philip was startling.

Haven't really looked into him much yet. Pretty sure that he red-shirted last year.

I don't think he's starting at LSU yet.

Maybe Stephen Rivers will go to an NFC team and we'll get the Brother versus Brother Super Bowl afterall, but not the one the Sports Mediots keep clamoring for.
