Holmes not impressed by Chargers CBs

    By Kevin Acee
    September 30, 2009

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and his Super Bowl MVP receiver, Santonio Holmes, contrasting opinions on Chargers cornerbacks Quentin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie today.

"That corner tandem of Jammer and Cromartie is spectacular," Tomlin said.

"They play on the line of scrimmage a bunch, and we have to be ready for a battle from our wide receivers' standpoint."

Holmes, on the other hand, was matter-of-fact in his assessment. "Honestly, two normal corners," Holmes said flatly. "At one point, they were doing what they were supposed to do -- intercept balls and keep opponents from catching the ball."

Holmes said he views all corners that way. "They've got to see me on the field Sunday, too," he said
Jammer and Cromartie, by the way, have allowed 13 receptions this season while being targeted 25 times. By way of comparison, Steelers starting corners Ike Taylor and William Gay have been burned 27 times on 42 passes.

Just what I would expect a confident WR to say. Would you want to read VJ saying that he's likely to get shut down by any CB in the league.

I really don't expect Holmes to hurt us much - unless Hart goes into his zombie dumb-phuc routine. :icon_evil:

I'm much more concerned about Heath Miller.

Holmes didn't do much of anything the last time we played the Steelers.

Ditto. Great if we can keep him under 60 yards I would say. I just don't want to see any of those long gainers down the seam.

I agree with Buck. A good confident receiver would certainly talk like one and play like one. Holmes hasn't done much of anything to us though so obviously they're better than he gives them credit.

I suspect that the receivers will be effective, but not as powerful as the Steelers rushing attack in this game. The Steelers are setting something up and moving away from the offense they were last year, towards some slow running game approach, and it might come to a head against our patchwork defensive line and less-than-spectacular front seven as a whole.

Remember the last game when Wilhelm gave him a high five after he scored a touchdown against us? Glad that puss is gone.

Going to be an interesting matchup. We got our solid veteran CB (Jammer) going against their solid veteran WR (Ward).

And our young loudmouth douche CB (Cromartie) going against their young loudmouth douche WR (Holmes).

I suspect the discrepancy in the defensive stats is due to the fact people are running on us more than normal. I'm really going to enjoy finding out if Cromartie and Holmes get into it during the game. Love to have helmet mikes on those two.

I agree with Buck, wouldn't expect anything less from a good WR. But I do hope our backs use this as motivation, the same way Pitt uses the towel stomp as motivation. Is Kevin Burnett going to be covering Heath Miller?

I expect good things from our defense and I know the feeling around here is they suck. Fact is, Rivera is getting them to go on basic's and build on that keep adding on until it comes without thinking.

Our run D sucks worse than our pass D does so I'm encouraged by that. Get a hold of the tough stuff and don't sweat the run stuff, it will all work out.

I'm not a fan of cocky smack talk at any time, but if you have to do it, at least back it up.

    He backed it up.
