How in the hell did this lunch box get the cover of SI?

From time to time, I like to look around at old SI covers from back in the day. I have seen this particular cover many times, but It just hit me...

We have had a ton of GREAT football players in San Diego, and Ryan Leaf gets a cover...? Just what did this guy do to establish himself as SI Cover worthy...

    What a shame...

BTW, bringing up Leaf isn't bad...He reminds of how bad it was and how damn good it is now...I recommend thinking of that ******* as least once a year.

Lunchbox?? :icon_huh: That's an insult to lunchboxes everywhere. Leaf never sank to the sub-human level of Michael Vick, but from an athlete/fan point of view, he's a total waste of skin - with an a$$holiness factor that's off the charts.

Do a starting lineup then vs. a starting lineup now and see if one single person from that team would start on this squad.

Hitman at safety, Seau at LB. That's about it. No one on offense at all.

Good to see a Leaf post can still get QTucker worked up! :)

I would Add Darren Bennett as the P and Natrone Means as a RB to that list.

This is when Leaf was a Rookie in 1998.

I would love to have Means as one of LT's back ups as when Means was playing then. To include Michael Turner as well. OUCH.

    Just my opinion.

    I stand corrected...

And, I'm expecting a platoon of assorted lunch boxes with legs and arms (Superman LB, Underdog LB, etc) to come marching into my office carrying on like the cavemen...

PS...Does anyone have any photo shop ideas they can carryout on this worth photo...

I'm still trying to figure out why Dan Fouts was never on the SI cover, but Ryan Leaf and Burt Grossman DID appear.

    Burt Fking Grossman?!? :icon_shrug:

I was talking starters on offense and defense. I don't see Means starting. Special teams you might have a few good arguments.

Can you imagine anyone showing up at Training camp and heckling Cro last year or Davis this year? We had some dumbass fans at that time too (even if they did turn out to be right).

So in the Leaf era YUCK!!!! :puke:

I would Go with 1 that has already been said in Jamal Williams.

I would also go with Curtis Conway, Jeff Graham

Means had a few great years, but he often came into camp out of shape. I'll stick with LT and Turner.

i'd sooner have Marion Butts or Ronnie Harmon then Means who had a few good years and then was atrocious

Turner's so much better then Means it isn't funny

    I agree 100%

LT is 1,000,000 times better than means was.

I was and am still wearing my rose colored glasses when it comes to Means as Trumpy is to Hart.

Williams now is better than Williams then because of experience. :)

You can have Conway and Graham on the *** end of their careers if you want. I'll stick to our WRs we have now. Remember also the top three Leaf's rookie year were Still, Ricks and Jones. ugh.

Natrone would have made an interesting fullback on this team.

I have moved on and "forgiven" Leaf. I can now appreciate the work he did for the Chargers by indirectly leading us to one Ladanian Tomlinson.

Without Leaf sucking, Merriman, Castillo, Rivers, LT and others would not be Chargers...
