would you have just kept Brees?

This is not to consider the future trade into it, just that they essentially traded a top draft pick for a new QB.

As much as I like Rivers, I'm not so sure we wouldn't have a Super Bowl right now if we'd kept Brees. We wen't 14-2 in 2006 because LT had the year of his life and our defense was top 10, Rivers kind of managed his way through that season as a first year starter. Having Brees could easily have made a difference in the playoffs, we've all seen him turn no name WR's into stars.

After that its too hard to tell. I'm not sure 07' or 08' would have been any better with Brees.

14-2 one and done debacle wasn't on PR -- so many stupid mistakes in that game even Breesie wouldn't have impacted the outcome I'm afraid.

Looking back and taking stock of our current situation - while I will always cheer for Drew and loved him as a Charger - Philip and Brees ended up exactly where they were meant to be. I wouldn't trade Philip for ANYONE and Brees is a star in the NFC.

Brees broke out in 2004 after Philip was traded for, was it coincidences? I don't think so, Brees was pushed to improve or sit, look what he's done for himself.

Both of these guy's are in the right place respectively. I see two dude's playing at the top of their leagues and doing quite well. I'm happy for both.

2006 had the "Marty" factor. He must have done something along the way to piss off the football ghods. The man is just cursed in the playoffs.

Also in 2006 Rivers had a QBR of 92 and Brees a 96. Not that much diff. Brees thru for more Yrds and 4 more TDs, but he did not have LT on his team either.

Montana would not have made a difference.

I am happy with Rivers and would not change a thing.

I'm happy for Brees but I do remember him choking a lot in critical games. I still haven't forgotten all those sack for fumbles he had.

He's had a great year so far but something tells me that they wont go far in the playoffs.

I'm not sure you can dismiss the additional draft picks - Shawne and noodle leg.

We got a QB, LB, and half a kicker....

Brees is good. But you also have to give credit to that system. I mean passing the ball 50 times a game to at least 5 receivers? I think most decent QB's would have similar success.

even with Brees playing very well in New Orleans, he still has not won in Denver.

Drew's a good guy, a real team player, & I'm glad to see his success in NO.

I've said this before though ....

With Drew, I never felt comfortable that any lead was enough.
With PR, I never feel that we can't come back until the final gun sounds.

Oh yeah - I would've gone to vet school when I had the chance instead of chasing after my ex.

There was no trade to make. Brees got his throwing shoulder ripped apart in the last game of the season in 2005. At the end of 2005 he was a FA and the only option they had was to Franchise him. They tried to work out a deal, but the uncertainity of the injury made the chargers balk at the upfront money. They low balled him with incentives so the if he came back 100% he would get paid. They did not agree and the chargers were not going to FT him so he walked. They also had Rivers waiting so that made the choice to release him easier.

Only 2 teams looked at him. MIA who said no after looking at the shoulder and NO who signed him.

Save a misused time out, Rivers was the only one who didn't **** up against the Pats in the playoff game that year.

    Not at all.

You can't go wrong with either so Rivers wins due to being cheaper.

Not that I care about Spanos' money but I do care about cap room.

And I was in the Brees camp when this issue was still alive.

We could have just as easily told the Giants to draft someone other than a QB and made the same trade.

I took the poll to mean if we can go back to 2006 when the decision was made to let Drew walk and go with Rivers.

If I can go back to 2004 before the draft my vote might be different.

    thats crazy

I can remember that now, Wasn't he playing when it was already over basically and that was the first domino to fall on the way to Marty Leaving?

I cant believe they didnt at least transition tag him to try to get something for him.

I cant remember another qb that young walking for nothing after doing well. Ever.

    Oh well, spilt milk.

Most folks didn't know much about Rivers except for the information some of us had back here in NC.

After Brees arm was injured it really screwed things up, but things all worked out and I'm happy.

He was the starting QB for the Chargers, and with him at quarterback the Chargers never won in Denver. With Brees at Quarterback for the Saints, in 2008 he took the Saints into Denver and lost that game. So it does not matter what team he has played for, Brees has never won in Denver when he was the starting Quarterback.

New Orleans needed someone like Brees. Look at what he's done for both his team AND the city. I'll root for the Saints the same way I root for the Bolts, but not nearly as loud of course :)

I don't follow your logic

When Rivers got drafted you already had Merriman and Keading, if Brees had stayed then Rivers might had trade value

If you're going further back and not drafting Rivers then you still have the #1 pick that you still could have traded to the giants for Eli and have gotten Merriman and Keading plus the giants 4th overall pick.

Having said that, at the time Brees was damaged goods without a contract and Rivers was the future, so it was a correct decision then.

Now? I wouldn't trade Rivers for Brees, Brees is very good but if you switched QB I think Rivers would do better in NO's offense and Brees would get killed in SD's
