one, and only one (no more) superbowl win in the Philip Rivers era in San Diego (let's assume he plays for the SAN DIEGO Chargers for the next 10 years until he retires) would you take it?

P.S. for the sake of argument, you make the deal and the men in black do the flashy thing on you so you forget about it and enjoy the ride like the rest of us

I'm not thinking about the hypothetical men in black suits scenario and I think just one Superbowl, that I'll get to watch him win, justifies the era plenty. It was a few seasons of some top-notch parity IMO so winning one is fine with me. Keep in mind, it's also the era of Antonio Gates and LaDainian Tomlinson.

OK... so one choice is ONE guaranteed Super Bowl win.

    What is the other option?

the other option is no guarantee, you take your chances, maybe no superbowl, maybe multiple

geez, it's a hypothethical, that's why I put the men in black flashy thing, you would forget about the deal, and enjoy the win (and you couldn't bet on it also)

    I don't think that's what he meant.

I think B4L (incorrectly) assumed by "guaranteed victory" that the league somehow forces it to happen.

How else would you get a "guaranteed" victory?

    It's a hypothetical question.

They're kind of tricky to wrap your brain around if you try and take them at face value.

He doesn't mean "guaranteed victory" in the sense that one can be guaranteed in the real world. He means "guaranteed victory" in the hypothetical sense that you somehow know it's going to happen.

A way of wording the question to ask what (I believe) he is getting at without including a hypothetical would be to simply ask: Do you think one Super Bowl victory would be enough to justify Rivers' era? Or do they need to win it multiple times?

B4L obviously can't do hypothetical .. It's like the Kobayashi Maru and he thinks he can change the rules.

I read the original question as more of a twist-o-change-o-mind-f@#k, Liz Hurley Bedazzled, make a deal with the devil, sort of thing.

I gotta say yes. I’ll take the one win. As long as that MIB blinky thing wipes me out. Although I’d like to place some cash on it in Vegas before I get erased.

Lots of religious fans NEVER get to see their team do it ONCE in their lifetime.

Let's put it this way, would you be satisfied with this era (Rivers) if they only won 1 SB. Or would you view it as a disappointment (ala Fouts).

Isn't it hard to get excited about that question until they win a Super Bowl?

I'd take 1 at this point. Maybe I've already made this deal but since I can't remember it I don't remember if I did. :icon_tease:

I do like the M.I.B. touch because I don't think the ride would be quite as enjoyable if I knew it was going to happen.

If I had that future sports almanac from Back to the Future 2 and saw that the Chargers won it this year I don't think I'd enjoy the ride quite as much as I would (and hopefully will) not knowing for sure what's going to happen as it goes. (Although I'd be a very rich man.)

A huge part of the fun of watching football is the anxiety leading up to the game and then the nervousness as the game goes on (hopefully) concluding with the excitement of victory at the end. That type of stuff wouldn't exist if I already knew ahead of time that they're going to win. (Regardless of how I know..fixed or knowing the future)
