TEMPE, Ariz. – It appears increasingly likely the Chargers will play at home Sunday, as evacuees leave Qualcomm Stadium and the weather cooperates in diminishing the firestorm in the county.Mayor Jerry Sanders said at a news conference yesterday he will announce his decision as to whether to allow the Chargers to host the Houston Texans at Qualcomm Stadium based upon the needs of the people who remain sheltered there.
The Chargers, holding out hope they can salvage the home game, said they could wait.
“Obviously, (Sanders) is under a lot of pressure, and we respect that and are patiently waiting,” team President Dean Spanos said. “ . . . There's always the option to play Monday night, and if that's what we have to do, we'll do it. So that gives another day for things to get better.”
About 5,000 evacuees remained at Qualcomm, down from a high of more than 15,000. More are expected to be let back home today, and more than 40 other shelters are operating around the county. Stadium manager Erik Stover said the city could have the stadium ready for a game by Sunday as long as it was no longer needed as a shelter. Stover said the biggest challenge would be clearing the stadium of the excess food, supplies and bedding brought in for evacuees. Among the other issues with playing the game in San Diego are air quality and the availability of police and other support personnel. With the fires no longer threatening heavily populated areas, the Chargers hope those issues are manageable.

While Spanos said no option has been ruled out, the team and league are leaning toward playing the game in Dallas if it cannot be played in San Diego. Goodell said Houston also remains a possibility, though the Chargers would prefer not to play in the Texans' home stadium.
Texans owner Bob McNair said he believes the game will remain in San Diego.
“The commissioner is exploring every option,” McNair told the Houston Chronicle. “I believe that if the San Diego mayor tells the league they can host the game on Monday night, that's when and where we'll be playing.”
Regardless where they head next, Chargers players and coaches are preparing here.
They held meetings all morning at their Phoenix hotel, including a walk-through in the parking lot. Then they practiced and lifted at the Arizona Cardinals' facility here.
LaDainian Tomlinson addressed his teammates before practice and told them they have an obligation to focus on getting ready for the game. After practice, he reiterated those thoughts.
“Our job is to play football,” he said. “That's what we all need to remember. The National Football League is going to keep going. Obviously we all feel bad about what's going on, but we've got a game on Sunday or Monday or whenever it is.
“Right now we're just trying to game-plan. That's our focus. We're trying not to think about a lot of the stuff that's going on right now. We're trying to focus on playing Houston.
Numerous players credited head coach Norv Turner and the coaching staff for creating an environment similar to any other week and for saying the right things to keep them focused. So great was the desire to concentrate solely on football, players were instructed not to speak to the media about the fires.
That did not stop them. Two dozen players, plus more than 20 coaches and staff, were evacuated. As the team's plane ascended over San Diego on Tuesday evening, they crowded the windows to survey the fiery landscape.
But once they got to Arizona, they worked hard to focus on their work, which was much of the motivation for the team coming here.
“Until Tuesday afternoon, it was a huge distraction,” Luis Castillo said. “I wouldn't even call it a distraction. I'd say no one was thinking about football. But once we're here, once we're together, it's football. I didn't think of it once out on the field today.”
Said Lorenzo Neal: “It's tough. I'm sick of seeing all these people who have lost so much. . . . But there's no excuses. We have to deal with it. The Houston Texans aren't going to feel sorry for us, wherever this game is going to be. They're in a dire need to win a game. We have to win a game. We're one game from looking up again. We're going to be ready to go.”
Spanos stopped in Arizona en route from Philadelphia, where he had been attending the NFL meetings. Spanos spoke to the team briefly before continuing on to San Diego. “I'm hoping this thing clears up by the weekend, and we'll be ready to go,” he said. “ . . . Obviously we'd like to play (in San Diego), but it's totally up to the mayor.”

I think Monday night makes alot of sense. However if the air quality is expected to improve, then Sunday shouldn't be any problem. Monday would just allow a little wiggle room.

All that crap that blew out to sea is coming back on shore with the change in the winds.

I will be a while before the air clears out completely. They said on the SD weather that it will not be a strong offshore flow during the next few days.

The quickest way to clear the air right now that is even remotely likely to happen is a good Southwesterly flow and that ain't in the cards. We're probably looking at crumby air for two more days at least, unless that wind picks up.

I just listened to the Lorenzo Neal interview at NFL.com.
as I always knew he is a fine man, saying the Charger Familiy
helped all team's staff members by evacuating homes and installing
phone calling centers to support every single household.
The team is preparing well in Arizona to play their best football
if it's on sunday or monday night. I pray for good air condition
in San Diego and that the major allowes a game at Qualcomn.
This would be the best for our team, but if it's not possible,
the stadium at Dallas would be fine, and we'll win it to get 4-3.

An Emergency Services press conference this morning that a friend of mine in SD said he heard. It was secondhand, so it could be wrong.

I heard 500 but also more people were leaving. Including the 1000 transients from earlier.
