Poor kid has shrunk over an inch in height and gotten slower in the 40...college was hard on him! :)

The Pats walked out of his workout saying they weren't interested. At the time, people didn't know if it was all acting or if they really weren't based on what they saw. Since our pick at the end of the 4th got him, I'd say they really weren't.

Maybe he wasn't in the best of shape so that turned them off and slowed down his 40 time. We have plenty of time to fix that and get him headed the right direction.

We'll whip him into good shape and if football is his real goal in life - well, then, that works for the Chargers.

So does anybody know the details of how Oliver was declared academically ineligible for next school year?

Just seems strange that he wouldn't have known this until after the draft. And why doesn't this happen a lot more often?

Well, is there a cutoff date for declaring for the draft? That could have something to do with it, plus school is still going when the draft is held.

School is still going so the grades aren't final yet. Plus you can sometimes make up ground with Summer classes. If you blow the final and don't want to spend all Summer in class, the supplemental is a decent choice.

It will cost you some money because you go lower, but you get out of all the school stuff, you are employed a year earlier and you are a FA a year earlier.

Hell yeah we would have passed him through and gotten him a job on a local car lot making some bank. If he wanted a place to stay though the real money is at USC. ;)

He couldn't start at CB for OU this year though. :)

Thanks for the info, IAD. Guys, this is what I am getting at:

Is Oliver a COMPLETE IDIOT? If you want to "check out of school", then ENTER THE DRAFT AND GO PRO!

If you want to play another year of college ball (for whatever reason), then do whatever the minimum is to stay academically eligible.

The LAST THING you'd want to do is declare that you are returning to school, pass up the NFL draft, and then lose interest and let your grades go down the crapper.

Am I the only one who's thinking this? :icon_shrug:

Pretty sure he improved his 40 time/etc. over at Chargers Park on his visit. I would LOVE to hear what Buddy Nix has to say about him and getting him for a 4th round pick.

There had to be some sort of uncertainty. This draft helps guys like Oliver get in, esp. since the semester ended fairly recently.

Since AJ drafted him after a visit, I'll give the guy some space. His current measurables are not that impressive. NFL Today compared him to Ty Law. Fourth round is a reasonable flier if he's being brought in to provide a cushion when (if?) Flo leaves town. He was one of Georgia's top tacklers. If, as they are saying, he was out of shape trying to hit the books, his measurables can be improved, but if he flunked out of one of the academic programs that jocks get shoehorned into, it might be just as well to draft him now. It'll probably take him two camps and a season to learn the scheme.

Lets face it, corners are allowed to be dumb. (Though maybe not as dumb as DFlo) It is an instinctive position more than anything else. Kid seems to have good football instincts in coverage that compensates for being a bit slow.

It is a dumb safety you need to avoid like the plague. There with Weddle coming in we have a nice pair back there intelligence-wise.

Might be the first time in 15 years I am actually starting to get excited about our secondary.

    My opinion here.

I think our secondary will be a force from now on instead of a weakness.

my hope is that these guys will be starters for us, first weddle as one of our safties, Cro as one of our DB's Olivers as the other DB.

Even though I know it will be Jammer and ??? for the starters and for the Safties it will be McCree and probably either Hart or Jue as the other starters.

    That is just my opinions.
