The Charger veterans had their final tune-up before training camp, wrapping up their off-season with the second of the team's two minicamps.

Those long in the NFL tooth won't be seen until late July, when the team opens its first training camp under new coach Norv Turner.

Turner and the Chargers coaches have been upbeat over the turnout for the off-season conditioning program. The attendance has been sparkling, and the only real hiccup has been the lack of appearances of Drayton Florence.

Florence has chosen to spend much of his off-season working out in Florida. He does that to some degree every year, but this year he got a jump on his strenuous workouts, which includes training with Randy Moss.

The Chargers and Florence are an interesting pair this season.

Florence, a starter the past two years, is fighting for his position. Antonio Cromartie, the team's first-round pick last year, will be given every opportunity to unseat Florence.

It's likely no matter how that spirited competition plays out; Florence is playing his last season with the Chargers. He is an unrestricted free agent at year's end and the team isn't showing much interest in getting him signed to a long-term deal.

And with Cromartie on-deck, it doesn't appear they will.

Florence is fine with that, knowing he'll get more bucks from another team. The Chargers tipped their hand in what they think about Florence when they drafted Cromartie 19th overall last year, despite Cromartie missing his last season at Florida State with a knee injury.

Although Florence's attendance has been sporadic, don't mistake that for a guy not getting his work in. Florence is in tremendous shape and is consistently one of the team's hardest workers.

He simply decided to get the bulk of that work this off-season away from the Chargers.

After this season, it appears Florence will stay away from the Chargers for good.

NOTES, QUOTES

-Look for undrafted free-agent running backs Reggie Merriweather, Germaine Race and Eldra Buckley to get plenty of work in the preseason games. That's among the reasons they came to the Chargers, although the team already has NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson and established backup Michael Turner on the roster. Neither will play much in the summer games and that gives the three unknowns a chance to showcase their skills. "Someone's going to play in the games," coach Norv Turner said. "That's how, as a young player, you catch people's attention."

-S Marlon McCree's balky knee is feeling better. It was believed he would skip the last minicamp and focus on getting fit for training camp, but he's expected to work over the weekend.

-Training camp will be held once again at Chargers Park, with veterans reporting July 27.

-Rookie Brandon Siler on working under linebackers coach Ron Rivera. "It's been great," he said. "He's a good coach and a good person. He gets on me when he needs to but I like that because it makes me better."

-TE Scott Chandler, the team's fourth-round pick, signed a four-year contract.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It makes it a lot easier when you have someone like that." - Three-time Super Bowl MVP Joe Montana on what having LaDainian Tomlinson in the backfield means to QB Philip Rivers.
