General manager A.J. Smith won't have Donnie Edwards to kick around anymore.

Edwards, an inside linebacker and the Chargers' leading tackler in each of his five seasons in San Diego, has relocated and returned to Kansas City. That means at least twice the Chargers will see Edwards during the regular season.

Despite his productivity and classy manner off the field, Smith had no interest in bringing back Edwards. Instead, Smith - who seldom spoke of Edwards after tiring of his requests for a contract extension - will go with backup Matt Wilhelm or Stephen Cooper in Edwards' place.

Either of the youngsters could be fine - maybe even spectacular. But whether one agrees or disagrees with Smith, there's no doubting Edwards - who grew up in San Diego - had an integral role in the 3-4 defense and that he'll be missed to some degree next year.

"I wish we would have won a Super Bowl for Marty and for myself," said Edwards, who turns 34 next month. "But I'm just happy I get the opportunity to play at least once a year in my hometown. I had five very productive years in San Diego and did not miss one game. It was nice to have the fans' support, that they saw what I did for the team and also in the community to make it a better place."

Edwards will move outside in the Chiefs' 4-3 alignment, a switch from his inside spot in the Chargers' 3-4. But like Kansas City, Edwards knows the territory.

"Playing outside linebacker in a 4-3 is ideally the best position for me," Edwards said. "I've been fortunate enough in my career to play a lot of different positions and schemes. It really doesn't matter. As long as I'm on the field, I'll find a way to the ball."

His 27 interceptions lead all active linebackers and he's ninth all-time for that position. Now he heads to the nation's heartland, as the Chiefs try to reel in their divisional rival, the Chargers.

"It made a lot of sense in a lot of ways," Edwards said. "It's a place where I'm familiar with the coaches and I played with a lot of the guys on that team."

NOTES, QUOTES

-Backup DL Derreck Robinson and Ryon Bingham signed one-year contracts as exclusive rights free agents.

-Pro Bowl LB Shawne Merriman, who's off-season workouts are being tempered because of a recent shoulder surgery, is upbeat over the team's new uniforms." It's time for a new tradition in San Diego and our new uniform is just the thing to get that tradition started. I love the look, the fabric, the design...everything. It's more of an athletic look."

-LT Marcus McNeill got some face time working for the NFL Network during the Chargers' fashion show to introduce the new uniforms. "We've got a lot of young guys that are going to be here for quite a while," he said. "We're the new face of the Chargers and now we have a nice new look to go with that. I really like the uniforms. They're sharp."

-The Chargers signed a new three-year agreement with the Uniradio Group for their Spanish radio broadcast rights. That will give the team radio exposure south of the US-Mexican border.

-The team mourned the recent passing of ex-Chargers great Ernie Ladd.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I just went out there and played regardless of the dysfunctional relationship between him (A. J. Smith) and Marty (Schottenheimer)." - Former Chargers LB Donnie Edwards, on the weird dynamics of last year's club.
