I found some of the quotes in this article very interesting:

“During the game, I told Dean you learn from playoff pain,” Smith said, “but if we survive this and get to the AFC Championship, we're going to be better off.

“What I really took into account (in this decision) was that some of the players' performances in that game disturbed me. And those were players I brought in.”

So Smith, who has talked more to Spanos about himself and the future of the franchise than the coach, had much to weigh. Some of his players performed poorly. His head coach and coordinators – who supposedly are as separated as Lizzie Borden and her family from Schottenheimer – did not have a good day. In the end, Smith says he determined firing the coach now, with the club loaded with talent, would not be prudent.

And that, to me, anyway, is astounding, a mysterious decision.

“I talked with Dean for two hours after the game,” Smith said. “We took Monday off. Tuesday, it was all day and all night for me. I got input from players and people inside this organization and outside of it. I never asked the players what I should do. I just wanted a pulse, our morale, if we felt good about each other. A lot of them said they didn't perform well.

“I know people are going to say Dean Spanos jammed this down my throat. It's not the case, and I'm telling you honestly. I felt he should come back. I didn't want to lose a year. I didn't want to take a chance of a new start potentially taking us a step back. The potential of that bothered me.

“I made the recommendation, that we should stay the course with Coach Schottenheimer. It was in the best interest of the organization.”

The biggest message I get out of this is A.J. is critical of himself which is not the perception around the forums or the league.

It provides a great insight to the way he thinks and rationalizes his decisions. No one was immune - even himself from this evaluation process.

This quote is the most telling of all as to how we are positioned for a post season run next year

“During the game, I told Dean you learn from playoff pain,” Smith said, “but if we survive this and get to the AFC Championship, we're going to be better off.

If we as a team don't learn from this playoff pain, then you might as well blow the whole thing up. Not just coaches but, most of the players as well. About the only ones left after the dust settles would be our 10 pro-bowlers from this year, A.J., and Dean.

Sort of a San Diego apocalypse! :frightened:

It's the only way I can rationalize it to myself.

AJ is GOD. If GOD decrees it as such, so be it.

I like how short that list is...and how at three or four of those positions we're just looking to add depth.

I guess it is, what it is.

Marty is going to have a "Super Bowl or BUST" sign on his *** all year long.

    Yep.
The available coaching pool talent is not all that inspiring and you don't want to grab just any floater.

Now AJ has the year to think about who coaches this team in 2008.

Win or Lose, Marty will not be here after 2007.

AJ basically echoed the same points as the "Pro Marty" crowd. We are very close to where we want to be, there's the potential to take a step back if we change coaches, Marty's the best AVAILABLE person for the job...

..and most importantly, the PLAYERS that AJ acquired deserve much of the blame for what happened.

I would love to know what the pre-game speech was in that Chargers locker room

Watching Inside the NFL last night... when Marty was doing the pre-kickoff team break... you know, shouting out his usual "ONE PLAY AT A TIME!!" ****... dude nearly had tears in his eyes. I mean, he was jacked up more than I've ever seen him. Seriously. Watch HBO rerun the show this weekend and check that part out.

At the same time, AJ is sitting up in his cozy suite with Deano saying: "Damn... these kids are ready... they're gonna win this game"

Up 14-3: AJ is probably just gettin' even more comfortable.

Then... as the 2nd half winds down... that's where Canepa's article picks up the action.

Trippy. AJ knew it wasn't Marty's fault. And he actually had to look at himself in the mirror and wonder why he didn't upgrade the WR position with playoff tested talent.

That's what they said on Sirius today. A Chargers fan called in and asked who was available.

    Not good.
