    4/112 Matt Wilhelm--bench warmer
5/149 Mike Scifres--only diamond in the rough

This would have been Bobby Beathard's signature draft.

Well when you put it that way.... yeah pretty bad.

Wilhelm could still prove to be an asset, and it's hard to blame Pinnock for the fact that Lo Neal is just a beast. But I would have to call that one of our least impressive drafts of the last few years.

Don't mean to stir anything, but wasn't AJ's first draft?

Agreed... but has there been a worse draft since John Butler/AJ took the helm?

Don't think so. That was a "dysfunctional" draft. We still had a good April, though.

I think the topic-poster doesn't give Florence any credit. Florence actually had a very good season last year--it was just marred by his stupidity in the playoffs. Van Buren was a wasted pick but I don't think you can really blame the Chargers for that one. The guy suffered two major injuries and just couldn't play. Wilhelm is not a bench-warmer...he will be a starter next year...

And people also forget we brought in Dielman and Gates (and Osgood) in '03 as undrafted FA's. So yeah--the draft itself didn't look great but the rookie talent we brought in ended up being just fine.

1/30 Sammy Davis - Definite bust. No arguments here.
2/46 Drayton Florence - A good corner who made a boneheaded penalty in the last game we remember. Will continue to grow and improve; just wait and see.
3/62 Terrance Kiel - Bust indeed, but had the talent; just not the brains.
3/80 Courtney Van Buren - Gone.
4/112 Matt Wilhelm - Starter once Donnie leaves. He'll surprise some folks. Smart player, with a lot of heart.
5/149 Mike Scifres - Definitely the jewel of this draft.
    6/188 Hanik Milligan - Gone.
7/229 Andrew Pinnock - Promise as a power back/fullback. He's a 7th-rounder and still on the team, for Christ's sake.

The way I see it, AJ went 4/8 in this draft. Not bad for his first one as a GM, with Butler's influence still present. Like another poster mentioned, the late rounds and the undrafteds made that offseason for AJ. Antonio Gates alone absolves AJ of that draft.

I think it was a bad year for all but Florence and Scifers. Both are quality players that are still improving quickly.

    The 2003 Undrafted Class:

    Antonio Gates
    Kris Dielman
    Kassim Osgood
    Stephen Cooper
    Jacques Cesaire

I'd say that destroys any "AJ had a bad year in '03" statements.

That and AJ's first year as a GM was forced upon him after the untimely death of one of his best friends. Try working under those circumstances. AJ's first full year as GM, he was voted executive of the year (2004).

Antonio Gates more than makes up for having to acquire Dielman the year prior.

Yeah, the undrafted free agents were way better than the drafted guys. Pair this with the draft class and you have a very good year of rookie acquisitions.

Butler died just a couple of weeks prior, I would think AJ took the guys Butler wanted.

Was Eric Parker a UDFA (released from Texans camp) in '02 or '03? I forget.
