Is Rivers' recent play a slip or just a blip?

    By Kevin Acee

    December 8, 2006

His team has won six straight games and by Sunday night could be champion of the AFC West.

But Philip Rivers is not entirely happy.

The objective is not December. This season ends in February, as far as the Chargers are concerned.

“It's about playing to do what your goal is,” Rivers said this week.

So he cannot lie. He is not one of those players who will insist a victory is all that matters. Not now. Not with so many victories to go.

Rivers has not played well the past two games however late in the game with all the marbles at stake he has come through.

Erratic QB play is something that I expected a lot more of from Rivers and the fact that he has been so steady has been pretty amazing.

Hopefully he will get it going for all 4 qt and the offensive coordinator will continue to call for the long ball on occasion so the CB won't sit on the wr routes and make Rivers dance in the pocket.

The days are over that Philip, or the Chargers team in general, are gonna sneak up on anyone. Philip has far exceeded any of my expectations, and its only natural that his play has been somewhat spotty recently.

He knows what he's done wrong and he's aiminta fix it, so he may throw the errant pass occaisionally, but at the end of the day he,and the Chargers, will be fine!!

    Go Chargers :bolt:

well when i wasn't paying attention to his numbers early in the year i was paying close attention to his game management and poise. his numbers are not there the last 2-4 weeks, but his game management and poise remain the same. he's taken a lot of blinde side hits i don't like to see but ultimately getting the w IS the most important stat. he's fine, im sure he will have gawdy numbers many games.

Really? I think his poise has been his problem. He looks anxious and nervous and his footwork has been rookie-like over the last two games. It is kind of like he has forgotten his basic mechanics with the increase in hype and attention. If he continues to throw off his back foot his picks are going to start increasing.

Should be pretty easy to resolve these issues and hopefully it is indeed a few game blip.

What do people expect from a first year starter???? I mean come on, Peyton Mannings last 3 games have been worse then Rivers.
Theres no such thing as the perfect QB.

Rivers will be back this week. He'll throw 3 TD passes and LT will get 2 TD runs
    Chargers win 35-10

PR's fine. We should have expected there would be a period where he'd struggle a little. Teams didn't have a "book" on PR the first few games. Now they have film on him and the rest of our offense and this is the NFL--they're going to make adjustments.

This is one of the little declines PR will work through, and then next time he's struggling he'll be able to look back at this period and say, "hey, I worked through that, no big deal."

Yep. And consider that this is the first time in 3 years that PR has had to play an entire season of football. There is a "wall" that first year starters can hit. It's exhausting playing at that high level for a sustained period of time. He's probably a little tired.

I think your numbers prediction (3tds) is accurate. You know Denver will be stacking that box with 8 & 9 guys again. They do not want LT to go off at home.

These next two weeks is where Philip gets himself right back into the discussion of best QBs in the game... and makes his push for Pro Bowl status.:bolt:

Not having McCardell in there shows with Rivers IMO and has me a little worried for tomorrow. I hope Cam gets creative and maximizes plays when Denver stacks the line because once Philip beat that in Denver they didn't know WTF to do. Dude is a gamer and even when he plays like crap he seems to make enough plays and limits mistakes to put us in position to win. That's all I can ask.

The Broncos and their fans will be calling this guy daddy very soon. :bolt:

We need a good game from Philip today...with the Jags destroying the Colts, we're playing today for the #1 seed...Philip doesn't have to put the game on his shoulders, but he needs to protect the ball and stay tough in the pocket today and not get happy feet and start rolling out on every play ...hit his deep shots when he gets the chance...

I agree and Philip really needs to get his deep ball going, that is one aspect of his game I'm not happy with. We'll see better play from him today, he is still learning and hopefully has learned something about NFL defenses these past two weeks.:bolt:

Rivers passed for 279 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT today with a 136 QB Rating and 65% completion ratio.

Looks like a blip to me.....

PR has now exploited the donks defense like we haven't exploited them in years. They always overcommitted to stop LT and we could never make them pay. But that was before we had PR. ;)

It is hard to argue with 48 points against one of the better defenses in the league and a passer rating over 130. Just a little blip is all it was.
