Jets' Ryan puts Super Bowl guarantee in writing

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Rex Ryan's Super Bowl guarantee is now in writing.

The New York Jets coach was asked to sign his team's logo sticker on the back of ESPN's tour bus at training camp Thursday, a few hours after Joe Namath watched practice. Instead of just signing his name, the brash Ryan wrote: "Soon to be Champs."

"I've got confidence to put it up there," Ryan said Friday between practices. "I don't have to just put, 'Go, so-and-so.' Yeah, whatever. To me, I believe we'll do it, so why wouldn't we say it? Why wouldn't we go for it?"

ESPN's Adam Schefter, who was aboard the bus, wrote in his column on ESPN.com that Ryan was the first this summer to write anything other than his name.

That is, until Friday, when the bus stopped at New England Patriots camp and wide receiver Wes Welker wrote his name with this message, according to a tweet by Schefter: "One Game At A Time!"

"I'm not apologizing," Ryan said. "I just know what's going to happen. My crystal ball, I'm seeing a Super Bowl trophy in there. Now, I could be wrong, but that's what I see. But everytime I go to work, that's what I look at."

Ryan has said many times that the Jets are a Super Bowl-caliber team, and has irritated some fans, opposing players and media with his bold, sometimes-outrageous comments.

"I don't care if people don't like it or whatever: 'Oh, just shut up and win something,'" he said. "I've won a lot more than that person writing it, I can promise you. And, I've been there. My family's been to a bunch of these things and I know how to get there. The first step is, if you don't believe it yourself, your team darned sure won't."

remember when we were interviewing that chump to take Marty's job?

I hope that a sub .500 season makes him eat his words.

That's just ESPN and their usual bias.

They'll yuck it up because he's in NY.

Had the Chargers hired him and he pulled the same shenanigans they'd probably have a different opinion.

I'm with Leo and LVBF: I like the confidence, to tell you the truth. I think Ryan's actually proven to be a good coach and great motivator, can't fault him for that. He'll eat his words but I think he adds something the league and I like it. That said, I'm glad he's not our problem.

Big deal.... really..... who cares? Good, he's got confidence. He also didn't say THIS year..... I'd just love for the chargers to beat the living crap out of them in the playoffs.

Well, now that they have Cro, that should be good for about three or four missed tackles.

Just listening to Rex irritates me. Ask him and every player on his roster is a future HOFr.

Way to put a target on your back idiot, its not like your relying on a 22yr old QB (who happens to be your weakest link) to win games.

I would think a coach would know better than to offer up such bulletin board material to every team on their schedule.

    What bulletin board material?

It's not like he's running around talking about how the other teams suck.

He's talking his own team up saying they're championship caliber.

    There's a difference.

I like confidence too but I think he's confusing that with being cocky. He's writing checks his team has to cash. I guess I'm just one who doesn't like to hear people run thier gums. THey had a nice run last yr. but just like us failed to reach thier goal. I don't wanna hear anyone on our team guarantee anything but showing up and doing thier job and being a team.

He's put himself and the team on a public pedestal. He's made an arrogant gesture. I can't remember a coach pulling something like this. Even the brash ones talk about goals, he's making an assumption that discounts everyone they are going to play. Seems to me he's saying he's got no competition. The word I'm thinking of is hubris. It's not an attitude you want to infect your team. Confidence is one thing, self certainty is another.

But those are all conclusions you're jumping to.

All he's saying is his team is going to win the Championship.

I don't see anything wrong with a head coach thinking his team is good enough to win. :icon_shrug:

I'm not a fan of his statement. I am a fan of Welker's (and I hate NE more than tequila). I bet the chargers in 06 thought they'd win too.

Ryan is entitled to say what he believes about the team he is Head Coach of. I'd rather hear my HC tell everyone we can win a championship than say, we'll be lucky to contend for the division.

He didn't qualify it by saying we'll go undefeated or say anything to downgrade the competition. The good thing about this is, we get to watch the season unfold, he's made some very big goals for his club. Time to start climbing Rex.

    I like the guy.

He's goofy, affable and has proved himself a good coach at a couple of levels. Sure, I shake my head as some of his antics but it's not like he's a cheater who refuses to shake the hands of opposing coaches.

And just because the media is slobbering over his overhyped team doesn't mean he's hate-worthy.

I will be :icon_rofl: when the Jits don't even make the post season. I'll put that prediction in writing. We shouldn't even bother with them, we need to focus on the contenders in the AFC.

Anyone know what the over/under is on the number of times the word "swagger" will be used in reports about Rex and the Jets?
