SAN DIEGO ---- The only uncertainty in the wake of the Chargers' latest win is the fate facing Vincent Jackson this week in practice.

"We've got to decide whether we're going to fine him or get a game check ---- I can use the money, man," Chargers tight end Antonio Gates said with a laugh.

But at a critical juncture in the fourth quarter Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium, uncertainty reigned after Jackson's premature celebration nearly cost the Chargers dearly. When the dust settled, it hadn't ---- the Chargers beat the Raiders 21-14.

Much to the relief of Jackson.

"It's Thanksgiving, right?" Jackson asked. "Thanks for that."

The play in question came just inside of 12 minutes to play in the fourth quarter with the Raiders leading 14-7. With the Chargers facing a fourth-and-two at the Raiders' 40, quarterback Philip Rivers hit a sprawling Jackson over the middle for a key 13-yard gain.

Jackson leaped to his feet and performed a spinning spike of the ball with his right hand.

He thought he had been touched down by a Raider. He hadn't.

Oh ****...I was digging in the NFL Rule book and there should have been a LOSS of DOWN in addition to the five yard penalty irrespective of the fact we got yardage for a first down.

    brb...

Five Yards and Loss of Down (Combination Penalty)

    1. Forward pass thrown from beyond line of scrimmage.

It was 4th down on this play so the loss of down irrespective of the fact we got a first down, turns the ball over to the Raiders.

This is the way I read and understand this rule.

    What do you think ?

I do not like the fact the refs blew the call and against the Raiders I could careless but it appears they blew the call.

You may be thinking of intentional grounding.

That is why they all got together and talked about it.

They go through the rule books page by page, paragraph by paragraph, sentence by sentence, word by word in their preseason meetings. They go over every single rule, and its interpretation and how and when to apply it.

"While the call was questioned on the field, NFL Supervisor of Officials Mike Pereira confirmed to ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the call was correct -- and not without precedent."

"It is illegal to intentionally fumble a ball forward and, by rule, an illegal forward fumble is an incomplete pass. That makes it a dead ball. A 5-yard penalty is then assessed from the spot."

    -------------
"intentionally fumble" is the key. He did not attempt to pass it.

If the NFL Supervisor of Officials says it was correct. I'll believe that it was correct.

A loss of down is a poor term. A better term would be that the previous down counts. That's why intentional grounding is a spot foul and that prevous down counts. You don't get to redo the down.

So in our case, the fourth down did count, but since we gained the right yardage after the penalty, it was a first down.

Nice job on defending your boy but the fact of the matter is he could have cost us the game. I don't have a problem with showing emotion on the field but everyone on this board had a tight butthole there while the officials were figuring this out and all of us had that losing feeling when he did that stupid chiat. I don't think it will happen again but let's not sugarcoat this. Now with all of that said he still gets a hall pass for catching a HUGE touchdown in Denver. :bolt:

It was a nice catch because that ball was the hardest ball Philip threw all day. :) :bolt:

I really wasn't that worried about it. I pretty much felt we'd win the game. But because the jackson spike penalty was called corretly we just won it easier.

I also think were gonna win the super bowl this year if were healthy.

And next year the chargers will be even better.

But I do see a drop in housing sales.

Don't forget the INT he broke up on a tipped ball in that Denver game.

We need more linemen - both sides of the line.

If AJ selected 7 fat boys, I would be happy.

I'm trying to spread the word. I agree. We need two or three more beef studs. A very good Inside linebacker. A very good d-lineman and another very good o-lineman.

Were still light in the pants on the lines. We need more muscle on the lines.

Bascially three guys from the michigan team this year.

It is a deadball penalty, it is assessed after the first down was made. Thus if a loss of down had been ruled, it would have been the first down that was lost.

THe only thing loss of down means is that the down is not repeated. On an offensive holding, it's 10 yards and you replay the down. On an intentional grounding, it's five yards and 2nd down becomes 3rd down. Because we still had enough yards to get the first down, the only thing the loss of down meant is that it went from 4th down to the NEXT down, which happened to be first down Bolts. If we had not made the yards required for the first down it would have been first down Raiders.

Trump's interpretation of the rule is a little :icon_huh: .
