That's assuming his injuries are a thing of the past and he can get close to being the player he was. Last thing we want is another injury prone left tackle. Been there, done that don't want to waste any money on it.

I've never bought into the free agent deal and the Bolt's just get burned more than it works out for them.

Most teams get burned in FA. I don't remember where it was, but I read an article a couple years ago that discussed free agency, specifically the big named free agents that get the monster contracts. I don't remember all the details for how they classified top notch free agents, but basically it said something along the lines of for every guy that continues their top notch performance with their next team, there are 4-5 players that never even get close to the performance levels they had that got them their contract with a new team.

We don't need to be giving Long a fortune rewarding him for what he did in Miami. We need to find the next Jake Long in the draft.

The trouble with FA is that you pay for past performance standards rather than for realistic expectations of future performance. With football being a team sport, a player changing teams is basically guaranteed to have a change in future performance relative to previous performance, and it tends to be negative.

He will be in for a rude awakening. With his injuries and declined performance he will be lucky to get half that.

Gaither got more than 5 mil a season. I don't think that anyone should be under the illusion that Long isn't going to get at least 8.

Long is from the University of Michigan... they all think they are worth far more than they actually are.

Yep but don't we need more than 1 of these guys?, not saying 2 Jake Longs but we need 2 Tackles who can stand up and protect Philip. Might the starting RT be found in the draft (to ultimately become a left tackle) and the 2013 left tackle found in FA?

Yep. No need to reach on an aging vet in decline when the next 7-10 yr LT is likely to be there @ 11 or even in the 2nd round. The Chargers got some good years out of McNeill.

If Telesco stays true to his word there won't be much in the way of big name FA's coming in.

I agree, but I see no reason we shouldn't go after a RT in FA. They will be cheaper and we could use another Vet on the line

Sure. RT I'm fine with. I was just keeping this to a Jake Long (LT) discussion.

How much protection would Long be providing Rivers if he's injured?

Is Harris an option at RT?
