    Garcia Is A Raider
Posted by Mike Florio on April 6, 2009, 3:16 p.m. EDT

We’re hearing from multiple sources that quarterback Jeff Garcia is the newest member of the Oakland Raiders.

One tipster tells us that Garcia is already in the building and working out. (We haven’t yet confirmed that specific detail.)

Though some outlets are suggesting that Garcia will compete with starter JaMarcus Russell, we’re told that Garcia has no intention of competing with the first overall pick in the 2007 draft.

Then again, we all thought that Matt Leinart was entrenched as the starter in Arizona last year at this time, too.

Good, now we can see Jammer give him more "attention" like last year.

Here's another link confirming the rumor.

    That sucks. I like Garcia.

Bad decision for the Bucs!!! Keeping him would have put them in a great position to pick up a young QB.

Garcia's never been a backup, what does this say about the confidence Cable and others have in Russell?

I think Russell is a great QB... at least from what I've seen of him.

Though being successful with the Raiders is like winning a gun fight with a knife.

No. Taking it that I only see about 6 Raiders games a season, I think Russell could be successful on a different team.
He's what you call "wasted talent." Even is he went to another lousy team like the Rams, Seahawks, etc... that would be a step up. Hell... the Lions would be a step up for him.
As you (should) know... Raiders are the career killing franchise.

potential does not equal greatness. i personally haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe he'll have a long nfl career but he hasn't really had any consistent coaching so who knows.

    Cable gives Russell a nudge

    SFGate.com

Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell didn't exactly get a thumb's-up from coach Tom Cable on Tuesday.
After an evening at a work function, I just home and (finally) found in my Inbox a Tom Cable transcript from this morning's group interview at the NFL owner's meeting (thanks to my reporter friend who was in a sharing mood).

What jumped out at me the most was how Cable seemed to be calling out franchise quarterback JaMarcus Russell a bit. In essence, Cable said that Russell still must embrace the responsibility of being an NFL quarterback. He softened the blows by pointing to some encouraging signs, but also pointed to rookies Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan as examples of what could be early in one's career.

“In college, it’s easy,” Cable said. “At this level, I think there’s so much on that position, so much you ask him to do. That’s why they’re so critical to your success. You really look at it and it’s him wanting to be as good as he can be and understanding what it takes to do that.”

Exactly. If he eventually goes to a better team, I wouldn't be one bit surprised if he reaches Pro Bowl caliber.

No consistent coaching and not exactly solid blocking and receiving.

Can't coast on talent in the NFL is the message he should be getting loud and clear.

Garcia is also a film room junky and a gym rat. Maybe they are hoping his influence will rub off on fatty. :icon_shrug:

That's the message that whole franchise should be getting.

Al is trying to compete in the NFL today with 70's style football.

If I were Cable, I wouldn't be getting to comfortable there either. You know how Al likes to admit that he made mistakes in his past and bring back former coaches (see: Art Shell)

This just in: Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen lurk in the darkness.

He has shown nothing in his limited playing to warrant any more speculation that he will enter the pro-bowl than any other QB in the league.

Yes he has no real options and his protection is bad, however he has shown few if any flashes. He is a little difficult to bring down and has a decent arm. That is his only upside. There are plenty of other QBs in the league better than him.

    Volek is better than Russel.

JaMarcus may be motivated to perform now that Garcia is behind him.

I love this hit. Seeing as how Sports Science showed that Jammer hits with the power of a 35 MPH car, I think Garcia is lucky he just had a bloody nose.

    I wondered the same thing.

I also wonder how JaMarcus will respond to Garcia's competition, and the fact that Tom Cable will have a decent fallback opton at quarterback if JRuss should just happen to suck. :icon_shrug:
