Nate Kaeding kicked for the first time Wednesday and confirmed he expects to kick in the Chargers next game, Nov. 22 against the Denver Broncos.
“It felt good,” Kaeding said after trying about a dozen kicks from mid-range.
“There’s no point in pushing it right now,” said Kaeding, who has missed the past three games with a groin injury. He said he is still at the point of getting his leg in shape and will be ready to practice full when the team begins its focused preparation for the Broncos next Thursday.
“It’s not unlike a pitcher coming back,” Kaeding said of easing into it. “… It’s not 100 percent normal, but that’s to be expected.”
Besides, Kaeding believes it might have been overwork that led to him hurting himself in pregame warm-ups at St. Louis on Oct. 17.
Going into that week, the Chargers were breaking in their fourth new long snapper in five weeks. The extra reps as Kaeding, punter/holder Mike Scifres and the snappers tried to get in a rhythm, Kaeding estimated, caused him to kick up to three times as much as normal during the course of those weeks.
“It’s hard to pinpoint these things,” Kaeding said. “But I think I could have handled it better. I could have been more cognizant of doing too much. I think somehow it caught up with me.”
Kaeding tried two kicks against the Rams, making a 41-yarder and slipping as he went to try to a 49-yarder that he ended up sending low into an oncoming blocker.
The most accurate regular-season kicker in NFL history (86.7 percent) has made seven of his nine tries this season. His replacement, Kris Brown, is 4-for-5.

He's consistent in the season, which is just what the doctor ordered at the moment. If Kaeding's toe helps get us to the playoffs, I will be content with that and worry about the rest if we get there.

well now that we are getting our starters back, I hope they don’t go back to their losing ways, because the backups were starting to win.

The starters we're getting back aren't the ones that were causing special teams gaffes.

Well, maybe you can blame Kaeding's short kicks but he's always kicked off short and that wasn't too much of a problem until this year.

If we need to rely on the kicker to win...I know, situations for many teams is to perform in all phases but still, the team needs to dominate, score touchdowns and shut out the other O's.

the team needs to score at least one more point than the other team.

the Patriots still got their Lombardi when they had to rely on Vinateri against the Rams.
