    Per AJ's press conference.

    Keenan's cap hit .....

    NFLPA.org player page - McCardell

    Base salary

    2007 2000000.00
    2006 2150000.00
    2005 1000000.00

USA Today player salary database - McCardell

    Chargers contracts - earthlink

The "$4.1 mill signing bonus" is not accurate. Per the USA Today salary database, the bonus was $2 mill in a signing bonus and $ 2,101,210 in "other bonus" - which MUST be a roster bonus based on Keenan's cap hit for that season (2005). Roster bonuses are one time hits amortized to the salary cap in the year which they were paid. Therefore, the yearly amortization for the actual $2 mill signing bonus in each salary cap season was roughly $667,000.

With that, the cap hit for McCardell was scheduled to be approximately $2,667,000 for 2007. The Chargers will incur $667,000 of dead space to release McCardell, roughly freeing up his base salary of $2 mill towards the current 2007 salary cap.

I figure about $4.1 million is added to our cap with Foley, Shea, McCardell and Kiel's release.

Again, that's just Shammy's best guess based on what I can find in the press. Nothing official.

A little less then that, McCardell was only 2mil and Foley and Kiel only combined for at most 1mil.

I'm a little sad about Keenan leaving the Chargers. I heard he
was a good teamfellow outside the game and I thought he could
become a good WR-coach or similar.
Jackson and Floyd will have to step upstairs to reach his cleverness
running good routes. Sure AJ will get some WR during the off season.
If McCardell doesn't get a highly paid new job, can he sign with the
Chargers again on a lower level or do we have to pay him as
    the contract was ?

Another all-class guy. Props to Keenan for his clutch catches over the years. Gotta respect a guy like that.

I hope he catches on somewhere and puts up 35 catches.

Sorry to see Keenan go. Great player and a great character guy. He did have an off year this past season, but I think that had to do with Rivers spreading the ball around a lot more than Brees did. With the Saints releasing Horn, maybe McCardell can get picked up with a one year deal by the Saints.

I think he's lost half a step, but there's still enough juice there to get him through one more season. Beyond that, it's time to hang them up. Thanks for the memories Keenan. You're a class guy. Best of luck to you in all of your future endeavers.
