    Athletics To Acquire Kevin Kouzmanoff

By Tim Dierkes [January 15, 2010 at 5:57pm CST]

The Athletics have reached an agreement with the Padres to acquire third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and a minor leaguer for outfielder Aaron Cunningham and another player, MLBTR has learned from a source close to the Padres. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle confirmed that the A's are sending Scott Hairston to San Diego along with Cunningham (via Twitter). The players still need to pass physicals.

Kouzmanoff, 28, hit .255/.302/.420 in 573 plate appearances for the Padres last year. He's arbitration-eligible for the first time. His glovework grades out as slightly above average, according to UZR/150.

Cunningham, 24 in April, spent most of '09 at Triple A where he hit .302/.372/.479. This is Cunningham's third time being dealt. Hairston, 30 in May, was traded by the Padres to the A's in July. Now he's headed back to San Diego. He hit well with the Padres last year but struggled with the A's. He's arbitration-eligible for the second time.

Cunningham is a .311 lifetime hitter and was rated last year the 4th best prospect in the A's system + was their CF of the future according to Baseball America.

So, we essentially traded Kouz for Cunningham and Gallagher.

And as soon as they work out, we'll trade them too.

    I'm tired of this ****.

Not a big fan of Kouz anyway, I think his swing is way to long and loopy to ever have success as a contact hitter, but still the Padres seem to be striving to have the first AAA team in the MLB.

Trading away proven talent for unproven quantities is what happens when a small market team tries to compete in a league with no salary cap.

    WTF!!!!!

Kouzy was one of the best bats the Friars had.

Moorad is making this team into a Competitive Minor League Team. Sorry.

Looks like another building phase again.

Being a Small Market Team sucks.

    Another year in last place.

Anyone who thought we wouldn't be in rebuilding mode was fooling themselves.

I did not think we would be gutting all the great talent like Kouz on the team for potential talent from other teams farm teams.

I just do not like the constant Trading away of our Great Talent and getting back just Farm Talent.

Just once I would like for the Padres Now to go sign Free Agency Players in the Winter instead of Trading away our Great Talent and getting little in return.

We have to build around someone and right now that is not happening. I would hope we would build around Chris Young on pitching due to the Pitching friendly Petco Park.

I know I am complaining but this is sad that what we are doing. Thing just need to change.

Nice to see everyone is all of a sudden discounting Chase Headley entirely. Truth be told we got something for him; a great clutch hitter and a great backup OF who is happy here. We needed to move Kouz, it was obvious. Unless we got more for Headley I don't know why we wouldn't trade kouz.

The Padres have been shopping Kouz the entire offseason.

This trade comes as no surprise.

Part of it had to do with Chase really being a 3rd baseman.

No need to panic over this one.

And, while his defense was surprisingly great, Kouz still bothered me constantly swinging at the low and away crap and his OBP hovering around .300.

The West was hardly weak in 2006 or 2007.

They had the wild card both those seasons.

And the Padres were hardly rebuilding from 2004 through 2007.

They didn't start rebuilding again until Moores got divorced and decided to lower payroll drastically.

When your "2nd best offensive weapon" has a .302 OBP your offense is in trouble.

Anyway, if Kyle Blanks can play a full season like he played for his short stint he'll be our 2nd best offensive weapon...and would be even if Kouz was in the line up.
