In college, Larry English was a force of nature; Unstoppable and relentless, English arrived at opposing Quarterbacks with nothing but bad intentions in mind. Always the best player on the field, offenses couldn't stop Larry English, they could only hope to slow him down.

The San Diego Chargers are hoping English will add a new dimension to their attacking packages, allowing the defense to send three blitzing linebackers in on certain situations. Said General Manger AJ Smith shortly after drafting English, "This is a guy who can bring the heat. He's physical, nasty, great presence."

Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera has been busy devising schemes in which he can get Outside Linebackers Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips, and Larry English onto the field at the same time. Hoping to stack the pressure on one side with all three linebackers blitzing against a single tackle, someone is bound to get a hand on the QB.

English has an excellent burst off the line, is stout at the point, and is rangy. He'll be given plenty of opportunities to get to the passer and his natural abilities will allow him to maximize his chances at sacks and forced fumbles.

In 2003, Outside Linebacker/Defensive End Terrell Suggs exploded onto the scene as a rookie, tallying 12 sacks and 3 passes defended as a situational pass rusher with only one official start for the year. Suggs was awarded Defensive Rookie of the Year.

2005 featured Shawne Merriman's rookie season, and it too was filled with sacks and impact plays. The NFL's newest Outside Linebacker/pass rushing phenom would rack up 10 sacks with 4 passes defended. Merriman went on to play in the Pro Bowl, as well as earning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

As we prepare to embark on the 2009 NFL regular season, the Chargers once again are prepared to unleash the newest member of the double-digit sack club. If Larry English can duplicate the type of success players like Terrell Suggs, Shawne Merriman, Jevon Kearse, and Julius Peppers have had in their rookie seasons, his accomplishments will not go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Considering the spotlight that the San Diego Chargers currently enjoy, along with the type of defense the will employ, Larry English should already be considered a front-runner in the Defensive Rookie Of The Year race.

I would rather him hoist a Lombardi, then DROY, now he can hoist both.

    But I want a Lombardi!!!!!!!!!

Anything else is not going to hack it.

I seriously think it's going to be hard for English to win this award, as he will be in a rotation with Phillips/Merriman/Tucker.

Yes, there will be some "3 OLB" sets, but unless English goes INSANE when he's in the game, he's going to have a tough time winning the award against players who will be in for the great majority of the snaps.
