Larry English took all the vets out to dinner tonight as is tradition for the first round pick.

Bill came to $14,508.67. I don't think that's as bad some of the first round rooks have had it, but still, welcome to the NFL Larry.

Here's a copy of their receipt.

From what I understand Larry took out just the veteran players, no rookies, no girlfriends or wives. So, it's likely that there was a bit less than 53 people.

He got off pretty cheap. Merriman's was more than double that.

Yea, Merriman and Castillo had to split the bill on a 32,000 plus tab. Either way, it would take me a couple of months to work off English's tab.

The Chargers are hungry and Larry English is buying

    By MJD

It's a San Diego Chargers (and perhaps NFL) tradition. The team's rookie first-rounder is obligated to take the rest of the team out to dinner, and without fail, at this dinner, every monstrous defensive tackle on the team gorges themselves on lobster tails like they haven't eaten in a month. No one's really shy about running up the bill.

This year, Larry English(notes) was the lucky rookie. Shaun Phillips tweeted the damage: $14.508.57

    Immediate reaction: Yikes.

Upon further review, though, Larry English got off light. Shawne Merriman(notes) says that after he was drafted, his rookie dinner cost him $32,000. Maybe Merriman took everyone out to a fine steakhouse, and Larry English insisted on TGI Friday's. Five dollars to make a couple of deserts a la mode doesn't seem unreasonable.

The other famous Chargers rookie dinner came back in 1998, when a young man named Ryan Leaf was expected to take everyone out to dinner. Leaf was, um, reluctant, we'll say ... so Junior Seau(notes) stole his credit card and made it happen anyway. Leaf had a fit, and his bill was only $3,000. I hope everyone enjoyed their Extra Value Meals that night.

I remember seeing his reaction too. Dude was and still is a total JERK and a-hole. Dude needs to read the classic book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" like 100 times. He didn't so either very well!

Funny article about it, especially about Ryan Leaf when he was a rookie.

All I got to say, is that it must be nice to have this kind of money to blow on stupid things like this. Here's the link for the article.

I don't think 'he who's name will never be spoken' will have much of a problem making friends in prison.

And I bet he was glad to pay it, it is in the rites of passage. He has been accepted onto the team. I know I would love to have to pay a bill that high, but then that would mean my several Million in the bank is in great shape!

Maybe the former #16 can start his own football team and be a modern day Bert Reynolds (ala Longest Yard [the original for the younsters]).... Bet that team would suck...

    The $2200 was the tip.

The other $1800 was for the banquet room and $330 was for event coordinator would be my guess.
