Ravens trying to restructure McKinnie’s deal, may release him

Posted by Darin Gantt on September 4, 2012, 12:26 PM EDT
    AP
The Ravens may be on the verge of a major move.

Or it may already be made.

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports the team is trying to restructure the contract of left tackle Bryant McKinnie today, and that the “situation could lead to his release.”

Then again, there’s a chance it already has.

Within the last hour, McKinnie posted on Twitter the following: “Decision is made! I’m gone!

    Bryant Mckinnie

    @BryantMckinnie
    Decision is made! I'm gone!

The Ravens want to pay him less than the $3.2 million base salary he’s set to make, perhaps even at the risk of uprooting their offensive line again.

    Stay tuned.

Is this a rhetorical question? We're slated to start an UDFA at LT.

Hey! Miami has focused on improving their academic programs. Maybe this is why the football team has sucked lately?

Can we even afford him with our cap situation?

And what kind of contract do you offer a guy who may only play 3-4 games, and doesn't even know the playbook?

Give him a one year incentive laced contract. The dude just has to stand up and block so the playbook is not that big of a deal. He needs to know if it is a run or a pass play.

Is he a marked improvement over Harris bluntly? I don't know. He did an ok job last year and is being released to move Oher over to LT which is his natural spot. Just because he's a name doesn't mean he's better. I can understand the panic at starting Harris vs the Raiders but they shouldn't let panic push the team to make a bad decision. Btw what's better than one tackle with laziness and injury issues? A second one who also has issues with his weight.....

He doesn't have to be better. Even if you think Harris should still start over him it's never a bad thing to have depth. I mean, if we're starting an UDFA rookie at LT who's behind him right now?

I'm obviously not advocating signing him to some ridiculous contract, and if that's his demands then let him walk, but if the price is reasonable and the team can afford it then bring him in.

I'm fine with that on the grounds that I don't think there's anyone better out there plus our next in line tackle is Ty Green

Is there anyone better out there right now? If so why are they not signed?

What is the plan if Gaither does not return soon or at all?

I would rather have McKinnie than some other "diamond in the rough" UDFA.

Release Gaither, if he signs with and plays for another team file a greivence with the players union, then go after McKinnie is a whole lot better then what we have right now.

If we could pick up mckinnie for a reasonable amount I think it'd be good to have him, the more options the better. I'm hoping that Harris does well and earns that starting spot, I agree gaither is to much of a question mark and it may be best to cut our losses and part ways with him....

Let's see, what should my comment on signing a player from the "U" be?

Does he have a pending felony trial?

We do need a veteran to at least backup for Harris, but at what price? I have to assume McKinnie wants starters money, since the Ravens couldn't work out a deal.

I say we tell McKinnie he can have Gaither's contract if he can beat him in a cage match.

    Two walk in ....

    Edit: Gaither can walk, right?

As long as he doesn't come in on a Li'l Rascal. That would move him to Walmart greeter status.

I think we are in an awkward position in this respect as we don't know the situation of Gaither, so won't want to pay a great deal for a new player to come in when we may be getting Gaither back this season. Because of this, anyone like McKinnie will likely get more money and potentially a season long starting spot elsewhere.

For now I guess the team is relatively satisfied with Harris as the LT for week 1, how they go from there will probably depend on how Mike does. If he does well against a decent Oakland d-line, then the team will probably just seek a short term backup, if not we might see a more aggressive move to try and get someone else in. Again, how long Gaither is out for could impact this.

Sign the dude, While he is not a top tier LT, he is much better than trusting a UDFA (However talented he may be) to guarding Rivers blindside. Give him a 1 year deal and see how he does.

Don't be surprised if AJ doesn't even try though, McKinnie is old, slower than he was and motivated by money.

Also don't expect him to sign a contract where he'll probably end up on the bench for 12+ games, and won't get to showcase his talent for a long term deal with someone else.

I'd on bet Arizona, St. Louis, Chicago,a maybe even NYJ offering more money and playing time to move to RT.
