LeGarrette Blount throws a jab, again

Posted by Mike Florio on August 18, 2010 11:04 PM ET
Last year, former Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount rocked the college football world by throwing a sucker punch at a helmetless foe after a loss to Boise State.

This year, Blount is at it again.

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reports that Blount punched defensive end Eric Bakhtiari after the final play of practice. This time around, the guy on the receiving end was wearing a helmet; Blount's punch connected with Bakhtiari's facemask. That said, Wyatt reports that the punch was "eerily similar" to the right jab Blount threw last year.

"I promised to [coach Jeff Fisher] it was behind me and that was in my past and it just came up again,'' Blount said after practice. "I got into a situation where the defense pushed me too far.''

But Fisher didn't seem to be upset. "I am not disappointed whatsoever,'' Fisher said. "His past is his past. Is that the first punch you've seen at camp this year? No. OK. I am not disappointed whatsoever. I have great confidence in the young man that he has learned from his mistake and is very competitive.''

The punch was part of an intense practice with, per Wyatt, "numerous" shoving matches.

They ripped his helmet off his head while he was still standing...:icon_shrug: 3 TIMES! I'd pop somebody in the facemask too.

I don't care what anyone says or does to me I wouldn't pop them in the facemask.

That'd hurt my fist more than it'd hurt the intended victim.

I don't believe he technically "punched" the guy, he'd for sure have broken a finger or a knuckle that way. It was more like an open palm strike to the facemask.

Either way, I'm not hitting bare metal with my hand when it's the other guy I'm trying to hurt.

The bigger picture is that Fisher has long since set the tone for his team to play dirty and likes having loose cannon types. Next thing you know this guy is going to be cleating a helmetless man across the face....and Fisher will be fine with it!

Exactly. It wasn't even like it was a heat of the moment thing. Blount had to walk back twenty yards to get the guy.

With all the scrutiny around him, the fact that the guy cannot control himself indicates that he is messed up in the head.

Nevermind the character issue regarding the ramifications involved in punching a teammate, I simply cannot get over the mental deficiency it takes to try and hurt a guy by punching him in his helmet. :icon_rofl:

Yeah, he should have politely asked Bakhtiari to remove helmet first...

That would have taken away the cheap shot effect.

Or maybe hit him somewhere he's not protected?

or wait for him to take his helmet off on his own accord and then cheap shot him?

    Or shove him?

Or just don't punch bare metal with his hand?

It's still a contact sport and don't pretend otherwise.

Runners slide into 2nd basemen/shortstops trying to break up double plays every day.

Running into the catcher happens all the time.

If you want to suggest a guy should play a no-contact sport try actually picking a no contact sport like golf or tennis.

    Sorry... No.

It is not a contact sport, players are not expected to make contact with one another... I reserve my right to disagree, as well as point at you and laugh in a mocking tone!

ha ha! Ha ha! hahahahaha ha!

Players are expected to mow the catcher over to attempt to knock the ball loose.

Players are expected to slide appropriately to try and break up a double play.

Just because it's not football with tackles and shoving happening every play doesn't mean it isn't a contact sport.

Sorry, I'm equally passionate with football and baseball and I just have a pet peeve when football fans start getting this beat-my-chest thug mentality and tells me that baseball is a wimpy no-contact sport when it isn't.

He's a punk. Anyone else notice that BOTH times after he punched the Boise player, and the Titans player, he immediately backpedals in the videos BEFORE other people try to hold him back.

    He's a punk, typical.

I think championship teams all need a guy or two with a little bit of *** in them.

Baseball is a game, like checkers or tiddly winks.

I think LeGarrette can handle himself just fine.

    I'll hand you that much.

Being able to use the bats on each other would make it even better.
