In a surprising move this morning, Chargers head coach Norv Turner fired receivers coach James Lofton.

“I don't have any idea,” Lofton said when asked why he was fired. “I was stunned. He just said he was going in a different direction.”

Lofton, 51, was hired in 2002.

The Hall of Famer, who played from 1978-93, has nurtured Chargers receivers Vincent Jackson, Eric Parker and this season worked with Chris Chambers, who recently said, “He's one of the greatest receiving coaches in the game.”

Turner did not immediately return a phone message.

Getting rid of all things Marty? Maybe he has a better guy in mind?

I liked Lofton, but not knowing the dynamics can't really comment on the situation. Go Norv.

    We'll see but I think it's a risky move.
We got VJ playing like a super star.
Chambers becoming just what we expected.
And Parker will return next season.
Those three alone could become one of the most dangerous receiving teams in NFL!!!! :bolt:

If I would change anything, I would consider a new OC.

Well, I'm surprised, but if you think about, from 2002 to mid-2007 season (before Chambers came), were the San Diego WRs really frightening anyone?

That's because Gates was our main receiver.
    That's on the OC!!

None of us know the dynamics so please stay off the soapbox until you know the details.

And before 2004? How much production did our WR have in 2002 and 2003?

    Ask your sources.

I was reading articles quoting former WR's and they were trashing Lofton. Something about not doing his job. The WR's were learning things from their new coaches which Lofton should have been all over.

When I read it (and filtered out the sour grapes aspect), I said

    S-H-I-T .........

So what you are saying Tony is the improvement we saw was in relation to the new coaching staff and that Lofton hasn't been doing anything all this time? Right?

I wonder if the correct term should have been "contract not extended." It was my understanding that Lofton's contract expired after this season.

I do think our WR's showed improvement under Lofton's tutelage. But, I also think Norv is entitled to create his own staff, and not just keep the remnants of Martyball.

    Assistant Coaches, contract information.

    Position/Name - Year signed through

    HC Norv Turner - 2010
    OC C. Shelmon - 2007
    DC T. Cottrell - 2008
    TE C. Barone - 2007 (not confirmed)
    DB B. Bradley - 2008
    ST S. Crosby - 2007
    OL J. Henry - 2007
    OL H. Hunter - 2007
    WR J. Lofton - 2007
DL W. Nunnely - 2008 (maybe longer - not confirmed)
    OLB J. Pagono - 2007
    QB J. Ramsdell - 2007
    ILB R. Rivera - 2008
    Asst. DB Ross - 2008
    RB M. Simon - 2007 (not confirmed)
    Strength J. Hurd - 2008

I'll wait and see what Norv does. He has made some great hires already as head coach, getting Bill Bradley and Ron Rivera. The receivers didn't look good at all until Chambers hit the mix halfway through the season, so I'm thinking that Norv has someone better in mind.

...Hi, I'm new here but thought I'd chime in. Maybe Norv has someone special in mind but I agree with this poster. A new OC and maybe one with a Sid Gilman or Don Coryell mind. With this defense, can you imagine how far an even more explosive offense might take them? I think the pieces are in place offensively to still be balanced but far more imaginative.:bolt:

I probably read it at the UT. May have been ESPN.com but when I did read it, I was not surprised to be honest.

There were comments about the tail end of the plays which Lofton never coached or some **** like that. It was around two years ago I read the article and since then I have suspected **** was up.

Something like that. Lofton was not doing his job was my reads and sense of the deal.

I am trying to remember the WR who was quoted and for the life of me, I forgot. ****. It may have been Reche Caldwell but I am not sure. I just remember Lofton getting called out pretty much and it was the first time I had read bad **** about the dude.

It seems that Norv is changing this team from a run 1st offense to a pass 1st offense, and I'm guessing this is in-line with his long term strategy. And who knows what the dynamic between the two was. As a fan I'll just hope for the best and see who fills in.

People have been complaining about the wide receivers for years. We had virtually no receiving production outside of Gates until Chambers was brought into the mix, and this move suddenly improved Jackson tremendously. I don't think that Lofton has done such a good job with the young players that he is all of a sudden untouchable. Obviously, Norv feels the same way. Maybe he wasn't preparing the young receivers properly? Guys like Buster and Legs need to get started on the right foot, and maybe Norv felt like Lofton wasn't doing the job?

In one season Norv has earned the right to do whatever he wants with his staff. What if Norv had to spend extra time with the wideouts taking away from other areas that he wanted to focus on because Lofton wasn't getting it done?

B4L you're already calling this a bad decision and you sure the fuc were quick on the trigger as soon as Norv did what he felt was best for his plans for the Chargers.

Thanks for the info Shammy and like you said it could just be the changing of the guard.

I would recommend Hue Jackson who was the WR coach in Cincy who worked with TJ Houshmanzada and Chad Johnson.

This year he worked on the falcons staff and made a big improvement in Roddy White.

Also, I agree with previous poster in that it might be time for Norv to find a full time OC to call the X's and O's while Norv becomes the true head coach and not a head coach/OC mix.
