    This guy thinks so ....

Oliver could be Chargers' odd man out

The Chargers have made overhauling their secondary a theme of their offseason, signing SS Bob Sanders before the lockout started and taking two defensive backs — FS Marcus Gilchrist and CB Shareece Wright — in the first three rounds of the draft. GM A.J. Smith also would like to re-sign FS Eric Weddle, the team's second-leading tackler last season with 96. All those players, along with returning safeties Darrell Stuckey and Steve Gregory, create a logjam at the position, meaning there likely will be an odd man out. We hear that person could be Paul Oliver, a versatile player who has lined up both at cornerback and safety for the Chargers. Oliver could be a free agent depending on how the new CBA is constructed, as he is set to enter his fourth year in the league. A source close to Oliver told PFW that he is staying in great shape this offseason and would like to return to San Diego, but understands he might have to go elsewhere to get the playing time he desires.

Oliver has had time to show what he's made of....... not much to show, unfortunately.

But he is capable of making plays. If anything it gives us down speed coverage for ST in case our secondary goes down There's no guarantee Sanders will stay healthy either.

We can't keep every free agent....... I don't see Oliver as being a top priority.

I highly doubt many teams, if any, fear the Bolt's secondary. Picks and passes defensed are great but knocking the hell out of a receiver does way more in terms of dictating the game. I hope Ski is going to bring this to the Bolt defense overall and start jacking some folks up.

You know what else makes a secondary look good?.......... a good pass rush. You have to look at the defense as a whole. Upgrading one area can have a positive impact to another. If we can get back to pressuring the QB, our defense will be a lot more feared in the league.

I think we were like 28th in takeaways last year. Hopefully Bob Sanders can amend that.

A top tire pass rush can help make an average secondary look great. An above average secondary can give a top tier pass rush the look of invincibility.

You know what can make an average pass rush look better? A good secondary. And that's exactly what our secondary did last season. There were a hell of a lot of sacks even when the QB had all day to look down field.

I'd love it Sanders could strike fear into the hearts of oposing recievers. But if I had to choose, I'd take solid coverage over one guy occasionally knocking the snot out of someone.

That said, my point is sort of moot moving forward. Whatever scheme that was working for the unit last year is going to change with our new D coordinator.

How do you know? Manusky may tweek things to his liking, but there's no reason to think he's going to make major changes to the schemes. The further this lockout gets dragged out, the less time coaches will have to install new schemes.

Hmmm... looking for the place I said, "major changes." Nope. Can't find it.

What you said was...... "Whatever scheme that was working for the unit last year is going to change with our new D coordinator."

So, you didn't say "major"...... you still implied that "whatever was working" was "going to change."
